I have a .19 Badger that this guy made. It's on a .22 Hornet action made by CZ . Shoots great - but I have never shot a cat with it.

Just passin through

I think the .221 fireball is the perfect fox-bobcat gun. Or you could experiment with loading down a .223 to .221 levels.

Just the right amount of whelm.

I have a older Ruger 22/77 in a 22 K- Hornet and its a Lazer out to 200 yards. It has done very well on smaller fur without fur damage. 40 gr blizt sierra. With the nosler 50 gr ballistic tips the blast prairie dogs and rock chucks. I would use them on coyotes but not cats.
Brother has the 17 winchester mag and loves it but I haven't been around it at all.

Fur friendly caliber for fox and bobcat to 100 yards -- I'm grabbing my Rugar 77 .22 magnum. I did have one coyote I had to track 300-400 yards.

If we’re talking rimfires only , always wanted to try out a 5mm Remington. Especially now that Aguila is making ammo for it.

My only experience with rimfires is a 22LR so input and experiences are appreciated

I’m looking at Ruger American rimfire rifles

EDIT : i’m not tied to a rimfire cartridge, but I definitely want a more fur friendly option than my 223 for Bobcats/fox. I would also consider a 22 hornet or 17 hornet.

you have the 223 already , load it down to about 2650-2750fps with a 55gr soft point and I think you can find very good accuracy and a less violently expanding round that is cheap and accurate.

then if you keep track of the difference between your current ammo and your cat and fox ammo you can just run the elevation up/down and be right back to using the other ammo should you decide you want to.

then you can stock the ammo deeper and or upgrade the optics with the money you save.

It'd probably be pretty decent on cats ,but if you're also wanting to be able to take coyotes ,too, I'd leave the HMR at home. Unless you have an Airedale who's looking for a fight ,regardless. grin

I'll second this ^^^^ as my experience also. Not saying the 17 rimfire or 22 mag wont do the job but the results always seem to be right on the margin. If centerfires are on the table I'd pick one hands down. I'd bet 50 years ago the 222 would be high on the list for what you are seeking. My more modern pick has been 20-25 grain bergers in 17 hornet but a MachIV/Fireball would be more fun

Missed the part about the .223 . You can have that .223 rebarreled to shoot .17 Remington as it’s still based on the .223 as a parent casing so same bolt face. But you’re correct about loading down being an option,GCP.

X 2!! I have shot a number of cats and even fox with my .22-250. With the right load and good shot placement, you don't have much to worry about.

I agree with you guys on the Hornet and the Fireball. Both would work well at 100yds.

But the OP stated he was looking for a rimfire larger than .22LR.

I think that leaves the .22 mag and the .17 HRM

17 wsm seems to be about perfect for sub 150 work. Now, I just wish more manufacturers made rifles in that caliber. I’m not a Savage B-mag fan. Winchester recently came out with some 17 wsm rifles, but I don’t know much about them.
