Switches from a spirea bush would put red marks on bare legs that would stay there for a while. I am sure the time out crowd would consider that child abuse but they taught a valuable lesson.

IMO, a lot of the problems we have in society today stem from parents not instilling responsibility and consequences for actions. But child abuse and discipline are not one and the same.

All I'll say is thank God dad found Jesus, life was easier after that.

Truth here, I got spanked with a small decorative canoe paddle at home. But nothing hurt like the 4 foot blackboard pointers they used at my school. And the school supt had a paddle with holes drilled in it. That didnt hurt much but it sounded terrifying. lol. I got my share of spankings and deserved most of them. I deserved others but didnt get caught. Spankings are ok, beatings are not.

Exact same scenario with me as well. However our school would make us sign our name on a line on an index card saying that we consent to getting a SWAT. In addition to our parents consent. I had so many SWATs that the end of my junior year my principal said this isn't working, if you get in trouble anymore it's Saturday detention. That was the last time I got in trouble.

When I graduated high school and walked across the stage to receive my diploma, the principal handed me something else. It was that index card. I had filled every line on it with my signature. Lol

I had so many swats growing up as a kid it's impossible to even guess the number. Most of them were with homemade paddles. I can remember squirming around in my dad having to try and hold me steady. I'm sure I probably got whacked on the lower back more than once. I don't know if I ever bruised cuz I couldn't look back there. But out of all the times that I got swats from at home or at school there is not one time that I ever felt like I was getting abused. I knew it was a consequence of making a bad choice, and those lessons have served me well.. I wouldnt have it any other way. There's no one else in the world that I have more respect for than my Dad.

Similar story here Savell. Dad spanked me and I didn't really deserve it and I flipped him off and said F U. He caught me and had a 2x4 laying nearby... no regrets.

I found out at an early age that it was real bad for me to have a very healthy willow tree on the side of our country home. Each time I had some kind of disicpline due I had to go pick a green limb off that tree.

I learned real fast for those next bend over the work bench situations that came due, I started picking the dried out branches. Dad knew I was being a smart (blank) so I had to go get another one.

Don't ever pick those long green willow branches. They will sting and wrap around your little weasel body at that time about twice. I guess dad would have gone to jail also. I had all those beatings coming as I recall.
