Same ky coyote hunter, very little ash from black locust. VERY LITTLE.

Pros of Black locust- Great firewood that burns hot with little ash. Very rot resistant, seasoned posts put in the ground last for decades, green posts only last about 7 years in my area so seasoning is very important. Very nice blooms in the spring that produce a fantastic honey if you are lucky enough to have weather that allows the bees to collect enough of it. Very fast growing.

Cons of Black locust- Thorns (although that is only an issue on very young trees and to a lesser extent on the small branches of older trees). Its not the best wildlife tree in the world.

It gets a bad wrap about the thorns from people who don't tolerate thorns at all and people who confuse it with Honey Locust which has much worse thorns. Black Locust are small thorns (about a half inch long) on the branches. Honey locust have thorns on the trunk and branches that are large and often have multiple points. They can be anywhere from 2 -8 inches long.
