Is the SCATA Fur Rondy auction leaders going to sell all their fur first, then everyone else who sent in?

I find it pretty ignorant that a fellow ATA member would imply what you just stated, it is not surprising coming from you Al. Since I have taken over as Chairman of the SCCATA you have done nothing but bad mouth me and the South-Central Chapter. Perhaps it's jealousy, but i am leaning more towards ignorance on your part to put in question the integrity of our organization.

I will be up there in FBX again this year volunteering and supporting Howler with the auction. Al, here is a open invitation for you to come swing by and ask me that question in person instead of sniping behind a computer screen.

Or does that box say "Don't send to Fairbanks" and you have to check it?

I read that the intent is for all unsold fur to be sent to FBX, the box under it gives trappers options if they do not want it to go to FBX. It makes sense to me, unless I am missing something.

Why wouldn't someone want to send their fur to the FBX auction if it did not sell here? Both auctions support the ATA and benefit the trapper. I am not aware of any issues over the past few years. If you had a issue I would ask when, and has it occurred again.

I'll explain. Limits are very important if you want to move fur at the Anchorage Fur Rondy. I don't know ( because I rarely see results from either auction) but I believe the Anchorage sale does better than the Fairbanks sale because it is at the Rondy. The limits that may move fur at Anchorage may result in sales at the limit and no sales in Fairbanks. That was my limited one time try on one species.

The goal is not to sell at the minimum limit, but set them low enough to get the price bid up in Anchorage. Getting your no sales back from Fairbanks will cost you shipping money and more work for the Fairbanks volunteers too. More than manually picking them up in South Central.

I agree with what your saying on the minimums and the difference between Fur Rondy and FBX. I honestly dont know how to fix that and am open to suggestion on how to.
SCCATA put in the ATA magazine an article that explained the process for Rondy and suggested minimum bids. SCCATA will do that again next year. If you go to the ATA FB Group we have posted AVG's.
As for shipping, again I agree but for people outside of the road system, Melvin from Delta took the led this year and picked up fur in FBX and brought it down here, and took the fur back up to FBX that did not sell, If there is fur from SC that dont sell up there it will be brought back down here and the trapper can pick it up at a one of the monthly meeting.

Can someone post the Fur Rondy averages here for those of us that don’t have FB?

SE we only put it out in the ATA FB group because that is where the large majority of the trappers that put fur in the auction are, not here. But hopefully some of our fellow Alaskan trappers will see the numbers and consider joining and supporting the ATA.

Those are really good prices on the hooped beaver and muskrat, but believable. Some of those other numbers look bogus, raw ermine at $20 and $36 averages? Or raw muskrats at $32? And I've no idea what the averages on antler are doing, not by the pound I'm pretty sure. Yet your marten averaged much less than mine down here. Coyote, beaver, mink, otter, etc. look good. Good prices, but you guys have good fur. But then beaver skulls for $53, they didn't average 53 cents at our sale this weekend. I had never contemplated sending fur and stuff to Alaska to sell, but if you are getting over $50 a beaver skull, I could see why non-Alaskans might try to!

Bearcat Our Auction is very unique in that a majority of the buyers are tourist coming to see the start of the Iditarod. You have a few Alaskans buying for wall hangers, and of course a few fur buyers. Ermine, the Texas Polar Bears sell like hot cakes and those are the correct averages for them and muskrat.
As for the antler, normally found by trappers on the line, and that avg is for 1 antler, The high I believe was $325. We haven't done the avg on the State Hide and Horn Auction yet but those are all pretty much matching sets, i seen two sets go for over $500 each. The high for a bear was bought by Russel Knight for $1500. Years past seen them go for higher.

Thanks for the explanation, makes more sense, I've been to enough live auctions to see people get stupid bidding. The antler makes more sense at per antler, just always seen it done per pound. Even matched sets and crafty or nontypical stuff that you know wasn't bought by the pound I've always seen reported per pound.

Bearcat, indeed those bidding wars are fun to watch especially when they take a little red fox and they run that price up past $200. Pretty crazy but very beneficial to the trapper and the organization.
