Steel traps were made illegal in Florida in 1972. Snares and cages were it.

After a couple years of back and forth, Florida has approved changes that allow offset or padded footholds with 5.75" max, DPs, up to 330 sized bodygrips.

Snaring has been changed to cable restraint rules (relaxing lock, no entanglement, etc.)

But, they still require a nuisance beaver trapping permit to use up to 7.25" footholds in drowning sets.

Overall its a win for Florida trapping.

Couldn't figure out a link, but here's a pic of email FWC sent out.

One of the rare times that trappers regain lost tools. Good for Florida!

That is great news! Is this the first state we reinstituted trapping rights?

I don't know how this stayed "under the anti's radar", but I never heard of much commotion about this down there.

I'll bet some of the snaremen there are not happy about it. After all the years it's been snares only, I bet there are some guys thriving with their snares and now they are saddled with CR regulations. I'll bet others are mad because of the new competition it'll bring, especially with the DPs. Good news for some, bad news for others I bet.

What do our resident Trapperman Floridians think of it?

I heard a little riff about the snaring vs CR rules.

Also heard some aggravation about the foothold rule requiring non-drowning or entanglement set locations. Maybe the additional nuisance beaver permit addressed that.

Maybe we can get snares in Georgia without the GTA raising a stink.

They should follow BMPs and go with CRs.

Kudos to those guys. I don't personally know any of the current Florida TA officers, but this is a win for sure.

I've only trapped in Florida twice over the years....both beaver jobs just across the state line. Used only snares on one job. Applied for & received the steel trap permit on the other so I could use 330s. My son handled a couple nuisance jobs for me a few years back...beaver near Jacksonville and coyotes near Ocala....used snares on both and did well.

Non-resident furbearer trapping license is only $26.50 annually.

No, no they shouldn't. CR's are a sorry excuse for a snare, and not setting them in any entanglement makes them very inferior. I'll say this too, they are NOT good to the coyotes and any other critter that chews out of them, and chew outs are very common with them. Always, always, always fight for real snares and never settle for CR's and their non-entanglement regulations. If you do settle for CR's you'll never get real snares and regulations allowed.

No.....FWC shutdown all the hound running enclosures about 15 years ago. Made it illegal to run hounds in an enclosure and to handle live coyotes.

BTW...red and grey foxes enjoy total protection in Florida. Fox houndsmen got this done decades ago and it hasn't been changed. Then FWC, pushed by the antis, got the houndsmen's pens shut down. What goes around...comes around....

ADC,
Georgia has ZERO chance of ever allowing snaring except by referring to BMPs and CRs.

Done tried it one time....no-go.

We can use snares for beaver only. And the snare must be set in water or within 10 feet of water. Only beaver can be taken using snares. Any other critters captured must be released if alive. Dead snared critters, other than beaver, cannot legally be possessed.
