I understand that you folks that know what you're doing often add high proof white liquor to lure to prevent mold and to provide evaporative lift. I'm wondering how much you add roughly percentage wise. I'm working with 190 proof everclear. Thank you for looking.

I should add that I'm making a castor based beaver lure.

Big Sam, I have only worked with green or semi dried castors. Cut into pieces then ground into a paste. Then used Methyl Paraben to prevent mold. For preserving the castors use Zinc Valerate or Sodium Benzoate.

I believe the alcohol is mainly used as a Tincturing Agent, with a few possible side benefits. Also, I believe Paul, uses alcohol to prevent mold in his dried castors.

Hopefully, this is a start to answering your question?

Thank you Mark. That gives me information I didn't have before. I appreciate it.

Big Sam every year i make a batch using a fall spice wine i dry the castors then place them in a clean mason jar and cover with the wine to this i add a bit of PGA or good shine i shake this up once a week and let go for at least 6 months(a year is better)
then strain the liquid and grind 2x then add glycerin to freeze proof this is an incredible way to get a sweet castor smell
to the left over tincture i will add 2x the amount of glycerin so if you have 8oz of tincture i add 16oz of glycerin to that this makes an excellent mixing ingredient to add to your baits/lures

Let us know if you could actually bring yourself to waste liquor on lure or not??

Lol, Yes Sir. If some lure recipe called for Grainbelt, then I'd have a problem. I can handle sacrificing wine or hard liquor in the name of trying to kill more critters though.

I didn't realize they still made Grainbelt. I bet that would make a great possum lure.

No alcohol necessary. Short term easiest bvr lure is to tear a small piece of castor off and put it on the mound. Next easiest is to turn castors inside-out, put in pint jar. Add some water at the stream you are at, shake it a few times and pour out on mound. Will catch at least 90% of beaver that come by. It does not need to be difficult.

I like a liquid beaver lure, so let it soak in everclear and glycerin. Strain off liquids to squirt.

I can't speak to it's ability to attract possums, but a finer Bohemian lure never existed.

Thank you, Dean. Perhaps I should just continue with my current lure recipe, castor and glycerin, and not worry about trying to spice things up.
