Another historical inaccurate statement ,Wag. For the first 1,000 years the Church was the Church ! Then you had Great Schism where some Orthodox left being in communion with the Church. But, but even then, the Church remained as the predominant church until the reformers began their activities.
Which led to wars and to tens of thousands of different Bible interpretations, practices, and beliefs.
The very Bible you read was compiled by the Church. Luther knocked out six books because it contradicted his teachings. The King James version was commissioned for The Church of England. Folks even protested against the CoE and so more denominations sprang up . 500 years after Martin Luther 's thesis we have over 44,000 ( more than likely more) denominations who contradict each other. Even today's protestants have gone way beyond Luther, Calvin, and Zwengli. Only took half a century. Over 44,000 denominations. That's why Jesus gave us a Church, not a book.
Now ? "Worship" has been reduced to a performance or a very wholesome self-help group. Baptism ? Ive seen "baptisms" that looked like indoor pool parties. Zero reverence.
Whereas, the first time the word "Catholic" came about was used by a Greek bishop around 100 AD named Ignatius,a disciple of St. John. Think I'll stick with where it began.
I'll take the writings of Polycarp, Martyr, Cyril, and Ignatius ( and many others) over Chick tracts, my friend.
And there is still no mention of kangaroos in the Bible.

Sheepdog, I think I'll stick with Christ alone. The RC church sure has added a lot of hoops to jump through. Much too convoluted. Jesus did not make it nearly so complicated as the Catholic church has made it. Historically , that's an inaccurate statement. The Church didn't add anything , the Protestant Reformation removed . Now we have at least 44,000 ( some estimates put that number to 100,000) different denominations saying their interpretation is correct. Talk about convoluted. I can drive through Lawton, OK. and drive by a half dozen churches within a mile of each other, each one will have a different teaching. The only thing they have in common is disdain for the Universal Church. What you are saying about all these different denominations is true. First of all, some of them who call themselves Christian aren't, such as JWs, Mormons, etc. The ones that are true Christians do have different interpretations such the bread and wine being just that, not the actual body and blood of Christ. Rather that he was speaking figuratively, not literally. He said do this in memory of me. Or, a person should have attained the age of reason before they are baptized. So, it's not necessary to baptize babies. They can get to heaven without being baptized. The bible is clear when it says, they believed and were baptized. The most important and the one thing most of these true Christian churches believe is that you must trust in Christ as your savior to be saved. Right or wrong, these petty things I mention have nothing to do with your salvation.

I'm pretty sure that the idea that you can work your way into Heaven is not a Christian principle. It isn't. There are many verses in the bible saying so.
