Sleeping in a small hollow with no fire would be awful. Don't know if I am tough enough to have been a rocky mountain trapper in the early 1800's.

Coldest I have ever felt, was when I made the mistake of using an air mattress right on top of snow. It was during a late season fall/winter turkey hunt. I don't think I ever got warm that weekend. Air temp wasn't that cold, maybe in the 20s, but right on that snow was not the best idea.

They were tougher men for sure.

I used to Winter camo quite a bit, back when I was 8 ft. tall and bulletproof. Coldest I have ever been out was in 1976 in northern Wisconsin. Snow was very deep so I dug down along a big pine log. I knew it was cold when I tried rolling out my ensolite pad and it just broke into pieces. Arranged them as best I could underneath me and waited for morning.
