I've got a question for all of you. What's the farthest that you would willing to drive to go buy a used car or truck? I drove 7 hours 1 way yesterday for a super great deal on a 2018 Toyota Avalon with only 59,000 miles on it, all leather and garage keep 1 owner. I put the Vin.# in the Kelly's blue book and found it about $5000 under blue book. Just about every car I looked at around here 250 mile range were priced to high or they had a salvage title with them. I'm think I hit the jackpot on this car and I'm super happy with the purchase. What's the best deal on a car or truck that you ever had?

Seven hours one way is a long haul, but it sounds like your deal was worth it. And for me that would determine how far I'd go - how good is the deal?

I'm in pa and most older stuff is rusty. I'm planning on looking in the southern states for my next new used truck.

For the right deal I’ll go that distance easy. I almost drove 8 hours for an Argo…..had the cash in hand but the guy backed out the day before…….at least he gave me a heads up!
People around here routinely go 12-14hr to pick up a toy or vehicles in Alberta. Good deals pop up there quite often.

I have driven to Texas from Indiana to buy an old m37 military truck. It was not a deal but available at fair price.

Now the best deal on a vehicle was a 1985 Chevy Chevette. I bought it from my grandfathers neighbor for $250 when I was in collage and drove it 27000 miles before I got rid of it. Cheap to drive, 13" wheels and tires were $25 each. Hood thick enough halling deer on it was not a problem just had to put the head and neck on the driver's side so I could see over it.

Best truck was my old 94 Toyota sr5 4x4 I bought for 3750 drove it 7 years and over 200k getting rid of it at over 320k.

Last year I drove a few hours to look at a Ford excape for my daughter and it was rusted out on the under side nothing left holding the pasanger side rear spring hanger so now im gun shy about going to far to look at things.

I'd drove that far for that.

A guy at work got a quote for a Mustang in the town 2 hours away and brought the quote to his local dealer for them to match and they said they wouldn't do it so he bought his car two hours away to save $1,000. I'd drive a couple hours for a $1,000 too.

Hours going to get the vehicle versus the future hours happy behind the wheel. No comparison.

Not a problem driving that far for the vehicle that checks all the boxes.

I would drive a good ways. probably truck and trailer to go buy a rust free southern truck.

best deal on a car ever 1986 Chevy Malibu I owned it less than a day and more than tripled my money.

I was working as a mechanic , a co-worker's landlord was on him to move this car , it had 2 tires that would hardly hold air and it needed plugs and wires but it ran.

he put some air in the tires to get it to the shop , we were closing that night so we pulled it in took those 2 tires off , got them off the rims and cleaned up the beads and remounted and balanced them.
that was a Saturday so you were sure the boss was gone when he left mid afternoon he was at the race track.

the plugs and wires were in the trunk he had bought them , there were a bunch of tools in the trunk as well.

he just needed it gone before the landlord had it towed.

neighbors at my apartment building had a little get together as college kids will do and I sold it that same night after clearing the tools out of the trunk.

and a case of beer and cash were involved in the sale.

next best deal I bought an 88 Lincoln town car off a different co-worker a few years later , he had all sorts of work done on it to stop that 302 from dripping oil , I parked it on the street , I did do brakes drove it for 3 years then traded it for a trailer I still own that was worth more than I paid for the car before I drove it for 3 years.

my 98 chevy 1500wt was also a good deal , a friends dad had it since 2000 and due to being old and medical stuff could not drive any more did I want the truck , yes I did and had a very fair price for it.

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

I don’t think much about driving long miles. I don’t much care for flying anymore and like the alone time of driving. If it was a good deal and I could pick up some other stuff that wasn’t available in my area like rough cut oak, cherry, basswood or beech, then I wouldn’t think anything of driving cross country. But I used to drive 18 hours in Alaska to go moose and caribou hunting.

A contractor friend when we lived in Alaska, used to get a work truck every two years. He’d spend quite a bit of time in the winter online until he found a good deal. He’d fly down and drive back and always bought a 20’, a 16’ and a 12’ utility trailer to haul back. He’d pull the 20’ and stack the other two. He always made enough on the trailers to cover the cost of his trip. And he considered it a bit of vacation as he’d plan to see interesting sites on the way home.

Trail cameras and fresh snow have broke a lot of trapper’s hearts.

As it stands im thinking about driving an hour and half to look at an 02 1500 4x4 with 105 k miles on the 350 for 6k. Has th peeling clear coat but dont see any rust and it has a clean interior at least from the pictures may be a different story in person.

Needing a few more vehicles. Taking one kid to test for learners permit today. Now will see of he has been paying attention or not.

Never mind just checked agin and its been sold since this morning.

I’ve driven from west central Oklahoma to The Lake of the Ozarks to pickup a pair of dogs , and from southwest Oklahoma to Louisiana for the same reason.

I’d drive a ways for a good deal on vehicle.

The ONLY time we ever spent the night away from home was when we drove to West Chester to pick up a new/used Camry. At that time my stepdaughters were still living at home and they took care of all the pets. We ended up staying over night in Gettysburg.

Drove over 6 hours to pick up a boat in Maryland, and had to drive it back through NYC, ..G Washington bridge to cross bronx hiway, to Throgs neck bridge to eastern Long Island...

Cross Bronx is a nightmare in a car...much less a full size pickup hauling a 21 foot boat,,,,the trailer tires were on the lines, both sides! Those that know, know, lol.

Not looking to repeat that experience..... grin

Drove from central Mo to Sommerset PA to pick up a Ranger bass boat. Back in the early days of EBay, placed a bid on the boat that had a reserve at the last minute. My bid was very low but met the reserve and I won.

Was a 12-14 hour drive one way if I remember correctly. Used the boat for 4 years and sold it for $3000 more than I gave for it. A guy drove up from Louisiana to pick it up. He pulled in and hooked it to his van and headed south without even trying to start or run it.

To the OP I'm bad to make everything a math problem. How many hours and miles do I drive to make $5k- I'd think about investing that time & mileage to save $5k.

You have to spend money to make money while at the same time a dollar saved is worth more than a dollar earned. Definitely is a balance.
