What would be the best place to plant a bed of each. Near creek or high ground. In full sun or part day. I want to start now or wait until fall. Do you transfer your roots to new ground to get a larger bed or do they spread out on thier own. Do you have to cover in winter.

Horse radish I just replant the tops after processing the roots. I plant them underneath the eaves of my barn that have no gutter. No direct sunlight and the do fine. Soil condition is different everywhere. Mine is stoney and sandy without much dirt. They love well drained wet soil. I dig them up in ditch bottoms all the time and can tolerate considerable water. Ive never covered the plants in the winter. The plants own leaves do it themselves. It's time to dig them and make horseradish right now. Here are some of mine [Linked Image]

Just keep in mind that horseradish can be very invasive. It can spread very quickly. Miss a rootlet and it will grow into a full-size plant the next year. Can be very hard to keep it from running.

When I planted it I was encouraged to plant it in a place that would keep it from spreading. I have it at the edge of our yard so I can mow around it.

My friend James had a 20' some foot by ragged 8' patch of horse radish by one of his barns. He frequently parked tractors on it. He finally left some bigger equipment and sheet metal on it too long and killed most of it. I should go dig some if there's some left. Horseradish is tough once established.

Thanks for your help. I will plant some near a corner in the yard and maybe some along the road. That way someone can get some if they want. Sounds like it should grow well after it gets started.
