November 1933. Allagash, Maine. Depression. -30°F.
Husband: Bill Turner died in a logging accident October. No money. No help. 60 miles to town.
Left: Edith Turner, 35. 6 kids. Ages 2-13.
Flour ran out Dec 1. Ate the dog Dec 10.
Dec 15: She saw tracks. Moose.
Took Bill’s .30-30. She’d never shot it. Walked out at dawn. -30°F. Snow to her waist.
Tracked it 6 miles. 9 hours.
Found it at dusk. 1,200 lbs. She shot 5 times. Hit it twice. It ran.
She followed the blood. Found it dead at dark.
She couldn’t move it. So she gutted it there. Cut off one haunch — 150 lbs.
Dragged it 6 miles back. Took till 3am. Collapsed at the door.
Next day she went back with the 13-year-old. They built a travois. Took 3 weeks to get it all home, piece by piece.
Ate moose every day till April. Boiled bones for grease. Tanned the hide for shoes.
Spring, game warden came. Said: “That’s illegal. No license.”
She said: “You arrest me, you bury 6 kids.”
He left. Came back with flour and sugar.
"1933 Maine. -30°. Husband dead. Widow, 35, 6 kids, starving. Ate the dog. Sees moose tracks. Takes rifle she never fired. Tracks 6 miles, 9 hours. Shoots it. Drags 150-lb haunch 6 miles back. Takes 3 weeks to get whole moose home. Saves 6 kids."

It looks like she is dragging it OUT of the house. That is quite a feat given the snow is nearly ankle deep.

I have nothing clever to put here.

I thought she chopped it into little, packable pieces?

HA! That reminds me of a story I read somewhere. I will look and see if I can find it but this guy in Maine was snipe hunting or something and had to be rescued out of ankle deep water. Let me do some digging and see if I can find it.

I have nothing clever to put here.

Regardless, it was an interesting story whether true or not.

Maybe. Little bit of makeup, she might of cleaned up pretty good.
Dragging the 150lb moose haunch all that way in the snow she was certainly an athletic sort.

What I want to know, is was she using 150 or 170 grain 30-30 bullets to down that moose?
