Wow, a good thread sure went to crap fast.
Arrogance by definition is unattractive regardless of your country affiliation. Even if your country is the best at something, humility is a better personal quality and shows confidence much more than arrogance.
For those who disagree, look at the definition of arrogance. From Merriam: Arrogance is an insulting, overbearing pride or an inflated sense of one’s own superiority, importance, or abilities. It involves acting as if one is better or more knowledgeable than others, often leading to dismissive or disrespectful behavior. Common synonyms include haughtiness, vanity, insolence, and hubris.
That definition doesn't leave any room for "It's OK for me to act this way because I AM the best."

Ditto-now take your ball and go home whiney, lol. Do you know how to ride a horse YS? Is that question ignorance by Canadian standards or just a lame attempt at verbal slap taming. I need to know so I can fairly continue with the fun. Like in poker I dont want to over play my hand and run off the action.

That definition doesn't leave any room for "It's OK for me to act this way because I AM the best." IMO it does. From your own definition... "acting" as if one is better or more knowledgeable.....what if they're not acting? What if they ARE better or more knowledgeable than others? Where did all this humility nonsense come from, anyways? Is it a byproduct of religion? (Where are you, Savell, lol). IMO lack of pride in oneself (and one's country), is completely crippling this nation! When I was young, people were ashamed to take handouts from the government..... because they had PRIDE. Now people are being taught that pride, ego, and arrogance are dirty words. I call BS. If a person (or country, or company) is good at something, and does it to the best of their ability, they should be proud of that. And if they are, that pride will show through in their character and people will call them arrogant. And the people calling them arrogant do so because they know they are incapable of doing what that person (or country or company) has done with the skill with which they have done it. In other words, they are jealous. So instead of working to improve their own skills, it is easier for them to dismiss someone as being arrogant or egotistical. Then they call for humility, humbleness, altruism.... not because they care about any of those things, not really.... they just want the people that are superior themselves to stop pointing out that superiority and hide it under humility......so that THEY can feel better about their own failures and inferiority. IMO it's toxic........ and it starts with giving everyone trophies in grade school even if they fail. Those who excel are being taught that those who do not are equal to them. And god forbid those who excel express pride in their accomplishments, for fear of being saw as egotistical or arrogant. So, I'll have to disagree with ya, Ed. I will continue to appreciate ego and arrogance so long as the person expressing those traits can back up their claims.

I wouldn't say that "arrogance is looking down on others"..... at least not as a rule. Those people I know that I would consider arrogant are quick to appreciate talent and skill in others. They may look down on others when those others are people that wear their inferiority like a badge of honor. I think we all know people like the latter.
I think though that a lot of times people who act arrogantly simply do not have the talent to back up their haughtiness.... and that those are the people most people think of when they think of arrogance.

I wouldn't say that "arrogance is looking down on others".... Fine, make up your own definition. The one I quoted is from the Merriam-Webster dictionary. It's not "my" definition but the one I accept because the source was a widely accepted authority. I'm with you wholeheartedly with regard to the lack of pride in our country and how the self hate being spewed is hurting us. With regard to pride vs arrogance, I'm with Yes Sir To me there is a difference between pride and arrogance. I know a lot of people that are very very good at what they do and take pride in what they do and are very humble about it. And from my view their humbleness speaks of more confidence, security in who they are and their abilities than arrogance. Humble people generally get more respect than arrogant people which is a great advantage. Arrogance is looking down on others and I don't know too many people that personally like to be looked down by others so I have a hard time seeing arrogance as a good thing.

Both sides of my family started in Russia. They worked their way to Canada through the quagmire area that is Eastern Europe. It Canada for a winter. Too cold, packed up the wagons and off to Mexico, then that sucked and back to Canada. Not sure why they never stopped in the US.
The strangers I meet in the US are pretty normal, no different than us besides seeing the odd open carry or someone printing……..I usually keep track of them in stores or events as it’s good to know who’s packing if something goes down……lol. Some used to be arrogant when travelling up here, but they been pretty quiet the last few years. They seem to be under the impression that everyone hates them which isn’t normally the case. Bear & goose hunters, all been top notch people.

If Americans are so arrogant then why do all these foreigners want to come here? And when they do, we cant get rid of them. Btw...I have no desire to visit Europe.....which is where 23&Me says my bloodline originated.

Because of the massive amounts of freedom and opportunity we have here vs most other places in the world ?
