I planted these the same day, from the same seed stock and with the same soil. They all have gotten the same amount of sunlight. I just found it odd.

Were you drinking heavy around the time you switched from square to round?

Possibly. Maybe I planted them upside down.

Are those pumpkin seeds or pumpkin plants?

They were one first and are now turning into the other. They are seeds from my Grand Mothers pumpkins. I save some seeds each year and replant them. They grow big, at least for here.

Appears that the square pots have more moisture in them than the round pots. Just may be the clarifity of the picture. Did you fail to water the other planted pots?

Nope they all get roughly the same water. The round, brown pots are made out of some sort of cardboard so they make suck up more water but the black round ones haven't come up yet either. I just found it odd.

looks like the square ones are plastic and the rounds are paper. the paper would rob moisture from the soil. the plastic keeps the moisture in the soil.

Those peat pots really absorb the moisture and draw from the soil and increases the evaporation from the soil as a result. Just how those types of pots work. That would explain why the soil looks dry in those round pots. I found it best to keep the peat pots in a pan full of water until the seeds sprout so the pots can wick the water as needed to keep max saturation.

You suck at gardening. And any further advice should come directly from BuckN,,,, pumpkin champ for 112 years running.

Maybe 160 just to forget to put seeds in the round ones. lol

or turn the box 180 and see if the opposite side and corner sprout up fast.

I was thinking black may also be part of it , the square that have black on4 sides germinated faster than the one with only 3 sides at the top
if those round black ones are the next to sprout that might be the case. that the square being up against the dark edge and each other held their heat better longer to get germination

Or maybe that's when the little blue pill kicked in...and he had other things on his mind...

That's very cool.I would be interested in trading a dozen seeds with you from two or three varieties that I save every year.Most of my life i've tried to save heirloom seeds... Of some variety

Thinking about it? I have had that same thing happen with those round pots. I don't know what the deal is, but I always put it up to seeds. That didn't have a good germination rate, but that doesn't prove to be true.From what you did

It’s not a square versus round issue to begin with

I’ve never seen this before, but some pretty good explanation’s above.

The round pots don't fit tightly together like the square pots do. That allows the round pots to cool down more quickly at night. That means the soil temperature is consistently warmer in the square pots, because most of the heat comes from directly absorbing sunlight, not heat from the air. Soil temperature controls sprouting and root formation. That's why many people, myself included use heat mats to germinate seeds, to callous cuttings and to more quickly root cuttings.

I filled these containers with dirt (soil if you want to be a nerd about it), planted the seeds and placed all the containers in the black tote they are pictured in. They have never been taken out. The tote gets rotated 90 degrees each day to get them all equal amount of sun time. When I water them, they stay inside the tote so in theory, they all get equal water, heat and sunlight.

I like the square for efficiency in the use of space and the waterproof nature of plastic has its plus, once you get 6000 plants in a small greenhouse the air inside tends to be moist all the time creating its own biosphere

Les, I hoped you would chime in. I never put up my greenhouse this year. You are a heck of an accomplished gardener so can you offer any insight as to why the square black ones sprouted first?

Not really,except that they are all in a group ( same temp), and if one gets active… they all do if they are equal, has to do with pheromones, but I can’t explain it. I do everything in batches all the same. And I quit doing things that don’t work well… like peat pots.

They do sort of resemble baby pumpkins.

I stuck a rubbing post in the field already. If I plant pumpkins too, I may need a rifle that is belt fed or something.

All of the above, black draws more heat, less cooler air around the pots and also the square pots hold less soil and then can warm faster. White reflects sunlight, black draws it in.
