Not to highjack this thread but I have a couple of questions for marmot experts:
I am trapping a very large industrial complex that has many different operations going on, and one large area, perhaps 200 yards long and 200 yards wide, is covered with huge stacks of drying lumber. These stacks are probably 15' high and 16' wide, stacked in giant rows, 60'-100' long. I have found a few dens located in holes in the asphalt, (the entire wood-rack yard is paved), but all but two are under these enormous racks of lumber. The two I can reach split in two directions within a foot of the entrance, so they likely connect to another exit-entrance. I have blocked off access to the space under these individual rack rows where possible and near sitings, leaving a 6"x6" opening and set 110s in the opening. I have pulled 9 young marmots, and then a day of no catches, however there are still a couple young marmots as well as several mature ones, (including a giant that is extremely wary). I should add that they have abundant food, as probably 1/2 the campus of this operation is lawn, and a large canal, with water, borders one side. Total area is probably 40 acres.
I then deployed a couple 220s and a couple cage traps, however they avoid them all, and I am sure they have access to the dens I simply can't get to.
I have seen on here references to covering the cages for marmot. Is this like throwing a blanket over the cage, leaving the door end and trigger end open?
Another thing is, there has been another trapper working with this company for several years, but he "retired" last year, so I am working with adults that have likely seen similar pressure that I am applying now.
Just for additional reference, I cannot use a firearm on this one. I will need to actually lure them into the traps.
