Recently, I've seen a number of fishing videos where people fillet, chunk up and boil the fish they catch. I just watched a video where a guy did that with freshwater drum. I've caught and eaten a lot of fish, but never once boiled.

Do you any of you boil and eat fish?

If so, what species are best?

What do you add to it?

In most of the videos I've seen people dip the boiled fish in salted butter, like you would crab or lobster.

I have had it boiled and dipped in garlic butter. It isn't my favorite but better than an MRE I guess.

I have nothing clever to put here.

We eat eelpout boiled and dipped in butter. My wife really enjoys it. I like it about once a year, but much prefer it fried.

Also, I'm told that boiling it in Sprite is the ticket. I've not tried it myself, but I believe the folks that told me to try it.

My family has been boiling fish a long time.
We have a news paper article saying my great great grandfather was feeding his lumber crews fish boil in 1890

lake trout are one of the most common sport fish boiled and were popular way back

Whitefish https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_whitefish

are the most common now and have been since about 1910 or so

I have a cousin who fishes them commercially yet.

old speed queen washing machine tubs with a SS patch welded in make basically the ideal pot , you can use any large pot.

[Linked Image]

you can see the baskets on the table behind the pot , potatoes and onions in the bottom pot , when those are mostly cooked , the fish goes in you have to wait for floaters but it runs about 7-9 minutes you get a feel for it and if your doing several boils to feed a crowd you can really dial in the time for that pot , day , fire and size of fish.

traditional serving is white fish , potato , onion , rye bread , melted butter to put over it all with a side of coleslaw and a slice of cherry pie for desert.

the water is salted fairly heavily

it is some what comparable to Salt potatoes fed to miners in PA around that time 1880-19-teens

similar cook but added fish and onion.

the water could be re-used for several boils

salt potatoes I think they only added water never really changed it out as they kept it hot all the time feeding 3 shifts a day.

at least we cook the fish , the other cultures in WI just soaked the fish in lye

fish and fish livers = life , before they enriched milk with vitamin D , if you lived above a certain line you had 2 options eat fish and livers or be disfigured and or die.

so as Danes and Icelanders we eat fish

I wouldnt boil fish but I have poached fish often.Sturgeon is excellent poached.(but smoked sturgeon is better)
When I was a kid growing up we ate poached cod with butter at least once a week.
I wouldnt poach delicate fish like pickerel or pike. Those are best fried.Trout are good fried or cooked sagabon.

Cornmeal is good to clean the grease out of pelts.

I have misplaced a recipe that was pretty good for a poached catfish. Basically simmered in a stock then plated and topped with a mayo/parmesan sauce and lightly browned under a broiler.

Other than that the closest I come to boiling fish would be in a gumbo.

Only boiled fish on my menu has been catfish filets boiled to make catfish stew (or chowder as you Yanks might call it.)

I poach salmon in about a half inch of water, with dill, salt and pepper, with just a little lemon after it's done.
I usually then put it in the frig and eat it cold for breakfast. I do halibut the same way.
