Cages work great in large culverts.

I had a really similar situation a few weeks ago. I crawled in the culvert from the down river side and got a little water flowing. I blocked off the culvert with boards until it was narrow enough for a 330. The beavers that didn't go through the 330 were killed by footholds in black widow stands due to the steep bank.

Do you want the boys and I to crawl in the culvert for you? We'd be happy to drive down on Sunday.

Thanks Sam, but I am going to get this beaver then the township will get heavy equipment in to take the dam out. They have been there a couple of times this year, with heavy hard rains we've had the bog has been breaking loose also and plugging the culvert. It's been a strange year.

This sounds like one of those deals where you tell a bunch of your buddies your having a roofing party in the middle of July. Maybe if they`re not too wasted, drinking beer in the shade, they`ll be able to catch you when you pass out and roll off the roof.

There are a couple really good ideas here. Snares on poles at the entrance of the culvert seems viable. I remember a roadside pond I trapped a bunch of years ago when we still had some water. The water level was almost at the road and dropped right off like you describe. Maybe I was able to scratch a little dug out into the bank that acted as an entrance to a handful of mud, a very low key castor mound, a very small amount of lure. I don`t want an aggressive response, more curious. I was standing right at the bank and was up to my tits in the waders and there was nothing to work with, so I told the Chesapeake to go get a stick. Water and a stick!?!? Will do!! He comes back with this little sappling, which being the 150 lb dog, he would usually come back with at least a good section of tree. So I cracked off pieces of the stick, shove them into the back, you know, make a ledge to impale the trap on, maybe 3-4" deep. Buried and staked the rod as normal right next to the trap. It works, but not my first choice. Can you take a couple T bars, shove those in the bank and adjust those T`s to pin that trap in place?

The Beaver and the Bear will show the way.

To tear it out think earth anchor. Only longer with enough cable or rope to reach out of the culvert on the down stream side. You would have to rig up some kind of driver long enough to punch thru the dam. And get the anchor to turn over against the up stream side of the dam. I would start with something 8 inches long securely attached to rope long enough to get out of the culvert. And start pulling. I've never tried this. It's just an idea that crossed my mind while reading this. Should be safer if it works.

I am going to try that. I have luck with sets like that in the spring. Might make one similar to that close to the culvert with a dash of popple oil for attraction. Castor works in the spring but not much this time of the year with my experience. One just has to try and maybe learn something new. Thanks everyone for the fun and ideas.!!

I've done something similar with a fluke style boat anchor. Got it over the top of the plug and hooked in then pulled. Took a few pulls but eventually got enough loose that the water was able to push the bulk out. Just don't get caught inside when it all breaks loose.

I remove all the long sticks from the foot and back face of the dam before I start letting the water go.After a few pulls with the beaver rake the whole dam starts moving-thatis when you swim out.
I prefer opening the big culverts the small ones are risky going in from the low end.
A 4 foot culvert is no problem.

This one is holding a lot of water back. My thought I pull the wrong stick I might end of quite a ways down the creek without a paddle. crazy

I done hundreds of them at work the big culverts are a piece of cake. The more water held back the easier your job will be.They dont let go as fast as you might think, you will have plenty of time to walk or swim out a big culvert.
Might have a few pics see if I can find some.
None of that poisinous snake or spider or gator nonsense in the north,

You could take out the beaver with a pressure set at the culvert, but I wouldnt mess around there.
An better option would be to put the canoe in and go upstream to the house and make some sets there.

If there are any left after setting around the house upstream remove the dam in the culvert and then set the channels blind with 330s.between the house and the culvert.

Put a can of tannerite on the down river side of the dam and stand back and ignite it. Wear earplugs!

Have to go upstream to find the house and main dam to efficiently trap them out.
Most of the time the culvert is downstream from the main pond.

Big culverts are a piece of cake to open when there is lots of water.
If you are scared to get wet or swim out you can let the water down gradually over a couple of days after the beaver have been removed of course.

Didn't know Canada had their own Turtleman. Y'all twins or just brothers?
I nearly 'rode the pipe' under a railroad one time using your method. I was one scared democrat. I'm too old for that now. Been too old for that for 40 years.

Made my full time living doing nuisance beaver for the RR.Whacked hundreds of them every summer.
Restoring the waterway to natural flow after beaver removal was part of the job.
Very rarely did I ever have to commandeer a machine to do the work.
Im 70 and still do beaver work in the summer part time under contract.
Still trap in winter also, not as much as when I was younger though.Like any other work when you are methodical and go about it the right way dam reoval is not difficult 90% of the time since all nuisance dams are new dams.
