One year I used California ground squirrels cut in half for bait.
I caught marten, weasels, and a badger all in wood boxes set for marten.
I don’t catch many marten where I can hang them. I normally set in log jams, or rocky out croppings or large logs. I seem to remember my marten catch was about the same as when I have used beaver.
By the way California ground squirrels are not present in the area I trap marten.

I never had any luck when I tried lure without bait. But I know a guy who catches 50-70 marten a year and claims he doesn't use any bait, but says he uses about a half ounce of a sweet (non-skunky) lure per box.
