White oak and red oak acorns are different in that white acorns don't need cold weather to germinate, They will germinate right away. plant them as soon as they fall from the tree and they will germinate before the snow flies.
Red oaks need to go thru a winter before they germinate.

Also white oaks are not nearly as bitter as red oaks when they fall. Red oaks will get be much less bitter in the spring.

Not all acorns are equal.
