If you were to buy 150 new coyote traps what type would you buy? They are for western coyotes.

MB550's are hard to beat.
I played with a few No BS K9 Extreme JR's last year, and they were very impressive too. Dogless if that makes a difference.
I have zero experience with Western coyotes.

I would go with a Sterling MJ500 or MJ600 if you can find them. They are pricey but worth every penny. If you are looking for something you can easily obtain, that is more affordable, and you are willing to possibly modify if needed, you should look at the Duke line or the MB line.

Easy choice, no bs

Either the No BS Extreme or the Junior. I’ve got both and they catch western coyotes just fine. I just got a dozen Alpha 3s and am anxious to try them. There’s a fair number of really good coyote traps on the market. I have a few Duke 650s and am impressed with them.

If I was starting out from ground zero I would pick any one of ones mentioned in this thread and use it exclusively. That builds speed and confidence and simplifies repairs.

I would take a look at the very new Duke 600 when they become available, if you have some time before your purchase.

Thanks for the ideas. I think I will order the duke 650 and the mb 650 and mb 550 to compare. I'm currently running Montgomery step ins and Montana #3s. They are all ready to go for this season but I want to replace them next year. That will give me time to try these other brands out. If the 600 is out in time I will try it also.

They all catch, if I'm spending my money it would be NoBS K9 Jr, MB 650, and Bridger #2 dogless for coyote and cat.

I can't remember when I lost a coyote out of a foot trap. Sure I did but its been a long time....... A.K.A. "our every day trap check law" means a lot of traps that may; not have enough spring strength, be too small or too large of a jaw spread, not have extra strong chain, not be staked or fastened correctly and may be set where an animal foot placement is off kilter from the pan/jaws etc. etc. can measure up and detain a coyote. Short check times solve a lot of the problems fellows have with their traps. Not downgrading any manufacturer or "system" but a regular daily check of your trap sets means less opportunity of escapes (with all animals) after the trap has made contact with the animal's (coyote's) pad/foot. Lots of pictures through the years from trappers with coyotes caught by the elbow, rump, nose, tail, shoulder etc. in traps of superior strength/cost. But a STD # 2 or well placed 1.5 size coil checked regularly, has accounted for a boat load of coyotes through the years. And a lot of fellows have 2 types of coyotes traps in their outfit, "the expensive ones and the less expensive ones". Maybe you have laws to limit jaw dimensions (or you go to a state that has different regs) and check times to affect what you are buying to use, or the soil and time of year you trap dictates a better (expensive) trap to use when Mother Nature gives you a "challenge" ( millenium term for PROBLEM LOL). Ask the guys on the "Live Market" supply train, what trap they use and how often they check their sets. Those coyotes are worth a lot of $ all times of year, ask ADC guys what they use when they want to hold a coyote for longer time spans while checking a hundred or more sets. I would suggest you take all those "contributions" into your situation(s) BEFORE you write the check...... My Experience. .............the mike......... If it is a "Heavyweight" and I am going from set to set out of the truck with 3 in hand for a walk it is something I notice. I know most people on here don't know me because I don't spend much time posting. I made my living trapping threw the winter for 38 years. Around 10 years ago I had enough. A lot of my trapping was done on private land. The owners got old and died and in most cases the kids sold the land or didn't have the respect for you their parents did. I was pretty burnt out. It was getting hard to replace equipment. I had two of everything. Boats four wheelers boat motors pick ups and a snow cat. I owned over 1000 traps. I wanted insurance against break downs and theft. I dealt with a lot of both. This last winter a friend invited me to run his cat traps with him. It inspired me to start trapping again. I really miss the freedom. This month I will be 60. everything I own is paid for and I have plenty of money to retire. Four months ago I told my boss I'm taking off in October and not to call me until April unless it's an emergency. This year i'm going hunting and trapping again. I sold most of my gear so I have been replacing it all summer. I did keep a little over 100 coyote traps but they are getting old and I want to replace them. It's to late in the game for this year but I will get them this spring so I have time to get them ready for the next season. With the new advancements in equipment i'm not in tune with the new lines of traps so I ask for opinions from people on here that have that knowledge. I ordered the duke 650 although i'm not a duke fan and I ordered the MB 550 and 650. I will test those before I start trapping to get an idea if I like any of them or not. I will have time to order others if i'm not happy with these choices. I want to thank the people that commented on here and i am still interested if others care to shear there opinions. I hope everyone has a good trapping season.

NO BS makes a really nice coyote trap, in my opinion.

The best out of the box trap I have ever used is the MB 550 2 coil. Never had or saw a need for a 4 coil trap. A stout built trap and nice to bed. Most any decent trap can do the job if you have a good catch. Like the wife stated you will have far less loss's on a daily check schedule.

Agree with Bob the MB 550 is the best all purpose dirt foothold coyote,fox and bobcat......The No BS trap is excellent as well,haven't used a Duke 650 other than the chain and swivels I'm sure it's a good trap as well.I use MB 550,No BS and Sterling MJ 600's.

I do run on a 24 hour trap check as much as posable even on water traps. We can run 48 hours if we need to. I have always wanted a sterling trap to try out and I do see they are still available so I will get a sample of them to try. I would like to try and keep everything one brand and one size just for simplicity. I have spent most of my time since April working on used traps I have bought ( peoples idea of a good usable trap is way different then mine) so I am ready for something I don't have to modify or work on. It's cutting into my fishing time to much. Thanks for the feed back.

It is good to see a coyote man that values his time enough to buy quality equipment.
I value my time in the field as well. I refuse to buy inferior traps that require constant tinkering, modding, or repairs.
If you have to make adjustments or mods to a new or used trap, it is a substandard at best.

I needed close jawed traps that would hold any nest predator, MB 450s and 550(2 coiled) fit the bill…450 will hold a coyote,but I think I’ll buy more 550s as my multi purpose trap. Love that trap.

I’ve used 2 trap brands for coyote trapping over the years and was pleased with both of them. The Montana #3 offset and MB 550 both in closed jaws and offsets. I’d buy either if arthritis wasn’t a problem. Now I’m learning the art of snaring canines and find it’s much easier on the wrists.

If I was needing to outfit a lot of new traps right now, given what’s currently available on the market, I think I’d go with the #2 Duke or maybe their #3 round jaw.

The new Dukes are every bit as good as Bridger. And at a significantly cheaper price.

Yes,#3 round jawed Duke is a sound trap….when the mink pan craze happened, put Wild River pans on ten of these (#2) pans, and intending to make cat traps out of them, I set for coyotes first thin the fall. They worked well enough, but the dogs seemed to get bent up nearly every time. Perhaps a fellow could put a rod dog or stiffener on the stock dog. I also 4 coiled with Taos lightning springs.
