All my coyote riggs have them. just watch how they work them over.

You can hear them working too if you have an active coyote.

One year I bought a dozen used 650s at a rondy and they only had about 7 or 8 inches of chain on them. I cleaned them up and stuck them in the ground double staking them all at the edge of a big been field I'd just gotten into.

Next morning I had to run out west so I checked traps before day light. First trap there was a coyote jumpin up in the air doing flips workin on that short tether. I put him down went around a bend in the creek and there was another one doing the same thing.

My take away was that the 650s with the cast jaws didn't turn loose of nothin but I been using shock springs ever since then. As others have said I like to hear them working.

I used to use stock Northwoods 1 3/4's with springs in the chain. I think they became more of a chew toy than anything. I don't use springs at all. I short chain everything, I don't think it is necessary.

Short chained ( less than about 15" ) I don't feel the need for shock springs, but use 3 swivels.

Long chained and/or drags, I use a shock spring set up similar to AntiGov's with a minimum of 4 swivels. And since wolves are as likely as coyotes or fox, all hooks are welded shut.

I use the KB which has a shock spring on the base which also puts more pressure on the animals foot when it pulls on the trap. When we could trap lions I set them up with 15-20 feet of chain and a JC 100 # shock spring and a good drag. Caught several over 100#. Would they have pulled out of another trap? Don't know what I do know is a caught coyote stays put.
