Shoot the darn thing before every hunting season. Well now that's just a waste of ammo...... Lol....before I go hunting I want to know right where that gun is hitting before I ever trigger a shot at any animal.

These guys who don't know anything about guns might be just plain old stupid, or they could just be ignorant. And those are not the same thing. Until you confirm the former, hope for the latter.
What to do? Tell him you will help him get it all sorted out when you get home.......meanwhile he needs to go back to Walmart and buy a box of Remington Cor Lokt to use on actual hogs.
Then when you meet up, do a quick once over on the rifle to see if it has any chance of working right........scope mounting and all that.........and once it's all good to go, have him use his current ammo to take three shots at cardboard at only 25 to 30 yards. Watch him to see if he has any chance of being a shooter..........and then see where the group lands. Adjust scope accordingly, then try for 100 yards. If he has a chance, offer any advice on how to do better, and then try again. Then maybe take shots yourself to see if rifle is any good, and to prove to him it can work if he does his part. And then coach him up as to shot placement. Then turn him loose.
Do this right and you will do your dad proud and come off looking like some kind of firearms savant.
Easy to vote your way into socialism, but impossible to vote your way out of it.

[ come off looking like some kind of firearms savant. [/quote] Bud I do this thing at least once ever two or three months dads a teacher and a deacon in the church so everyone and their dad knows him and knows hes a vet and like guns more then the usual person round here ... So they ask him . Dad However is a more pie plate accuracy type of guy who doesn't like tinkering at all so he sends them to me or heaven forbid he shows someone my you channel and they take me being a goober online makes me an expert and next thing you know I'm getting hit up like a expert gun writer . Doesn't help most just don't understand how zeroing and ammo testing works so they see me shooting 1" groups they think they can just give me their gun and I can magically make it do the same .... Usually with a never cleaned barrels , and mis matched ammo ..... A scope that doesn't belong on a .22lr much less a deer rifle ( and Lord help you trying to explain to them that I no... a $50 scope that's clear as crap and has a reticle thicker then a fence post isn't " good enough ") gets really fun when your trying to tech a hard headed guy how to actually shoot when they are convinced they're a sniper ...but who thinks shooting a coke can at 100yd is some kinda impossible feat... I really really really prefer teaching women honestly...for the most part . O and don't get me started when they learn I reload and think I can just pop out 100rd of ammo and sell it to them for $30

Lol....before I go hunting I want to know right where that gun is hitting before I ever trigger a shot at any animal. I have not sighted in my grandpa's 20 gauge since I was 11. (I do not use a scope). I have also never missed or wounded a deer.

Tell him to hit them with his purse. But have the white boy at the pawn shot sight it in first! If he can't blame it on the gun he can at least blame white people for his missing. Funny enough it's actually kind a the opposite deal . So idk why but a lot of black people where I live feel if your white your just like automatically better and more knowledgeable about some stuff ... especially guns ... So if y'all do something it's just right.. so have the white kid at the pen shop who can talk about guns for 5min and sound good , bore sight your scope and say its good ... Well to alot do folks there's no if and or buts ...so when it don't work it just doesn't compute. So idk just take it as a compliment

To each their own.I'm going to shoot my guns each year before I ever go hunting. It works for me.Hunting is to hard up here in northern Maine,NH,and Vermont for me to finally see a legal buck and I need to know in my mind that my gun will hit exactly where I aim.

I want to know it hits where I point it. if it was a year round season like hogs I would still check 1-2 times a year unless I was shooting a hog every month and it kept hitting right where I was aiming then I would just keep shooting.

WD funny is funny LOL. The fact that your dad and your community rely on you (when you hold still for it) should be taken as a sign of praise. Now does that keep you safe? Oh heck no- now you're everyone else's problem solver.
My neighbors loved me when I was a younger man. They'd call me each and every time cattle were out, a horse wouldn't load, or 2 other trappers had educated whatever critter was givin them trouble.
And I was young and dumb so I held still for it (but could hunt fish or trap on enough ground for any other 10 men).

Tell him to go see a doctors for genetic testing. He somehow missed all the genes American males are supposed to born with that gives them innate gun knowledge and ability.
Either that or he developed acute chronic stupid from exposure to liberal classrooms. Wouldn't that be if he wanted a 6.5 creedmoor and no something bigger ? That would be end stage terminal acute chronic stupid when it metastasizes to man buns.

Shouldn't be, but it is what it is. Take it as an opportunity to teach invite him to the range and explain the mechanics of how it all works. Just because folks believe stuff don't mean they're stupid.
