I know I have read this on here before, but have no idea how I would even find the post again. So, if someone knows where it is you can direct me there, otherwise we'll just start over.

One of these days, it's bound to start getting more fall-like down here, and when it does, I have a lot of yard/land work I need to do. I have two main issues and would like to ask the TMAN tribe which chemicals it is that I need to find.

1) Blackberries/honeysuckle vines. They are everywhere, and need to go! I want them dead and not to grow back in the spring. What do I need to use?

2) Trees. They are sprouting up like weeds in places I do not want them. Mostly sweetgum trees but others as well. I figure to cut them off close to the ground, but I read on here before about something you paint on the stumps so that they don't grow back?

Triclopyr will kill most anything (sprayed on the leaves, ideally around here in June/July). Can use it on cut stumps as well. If sprouts are too big to brushhog over I would cut and use Tordon on the stumps.

You need to get yourself a herd of goats.

Crossbow and roundup mix

I carry a 1 gal hand sprayer with Pathway, and when I cut trees or vines off at the ground give it a shot and move on. Broad leafs I use 3oz crossbow to 1 gal water and few oz of sticker.

Large timber companies who clear cut forest, then replant in loblolly pine, are troubled by sweet gum trees that shade out and compete with pine seedlings. They spray a chemical named Arson to kill the sweet gum, but not the pines. They use helicopters I think. I am no expert. I heard this in a conversation between timber execs at a hunting lodge.

So is RM43 better than Crossbow?

Tordon uses the active ingredient - Picloram which is a good brush killer - Tordon is the trade name
Triclopyr is another active ingredient found in Garlon, Remedy, Crossbow


Like you are saying spraying RoundUp but really 100 different makes of glyphosate which is the active indredient

I would NOT SPRAY RM43 like everyone recommends as it will kill all vegetation and give a residual. When I am spraying brush, I like to keep my grasses to prevent erosion and hold soil - especially in pastures and hay fields, fence lines etc - I like a mixture of triclopyr, picloram, surfactant, and a dye so I know what I sprayed.

Crossbow is decent and has 2/4 D also in it for other broadleaf weeds but if I were doing it I would prefer a straight Triclopyr product like Remedy with a bottle of RTU(ready to use) Tordon mixed in at labelled rates as you likely won't be able to buy a commercial labelled Picloram product at higher concentration.

Go to local coop and ask for some triclopyr and picloram.

I clear areas of woods for seeding with native grasses and forbs.
To clear blackberries I snip them off about 1-2 inches above the ground and put a dab of 20% glyphosate, blue dye and a foaming agent using a dispenser that makes a blue foam,
Just a a dab is all that is needed.
This is the best way as it vastly illuminates killing of other wanted plants.
Spraying on the foliage is the worst way as it also kills anything and everything under or close to the target plants.
These dead zones are open invitation to lots of other aggressive invasive plants.

Do the same for trees, cut and treat the stump.

You'll use less herbicide do it this way too.

Follow directions and use PPE when you use the stuff guys.

Coming from a guy who lives in the town and works in the plant where they make most of the stuff your'e mentioning. It's wicked stuff. You don't want it on ya. Tough guy or not.

Thanks guys. I ended up ordering Crossbow and Tordon along with a new hose for my ATV sprayer since mine somehow got chopped in half. We'll see how it does!

Add a bit of Dawn soap to the mix. The Dawn will break down the waxy coating on the leaves and allow it to penetrate.

For what it's worth, I have recovered fields overgrown with himalayan blackberries by shoving off the tops with a bobcat and then running a ripper about 20" deep on a 12" grid both ways. The following year you get a little bit of regrowth and you rip it too. I have four acres of blueberries now where it was wall to wall blackberries just seven years ago.

One thing to keep in mind, in prairie areas, an extensive seed library is still present in the soil. Trees can be removed and controlled with Tordon. Afterward you will have an explosion of broadleaf weeds. The best thing is to mechanically control the weeds. Over time native species will repopulate the area. This is not an overnight process but is rewarding when you see the native grasses and forbs reappear. This works better in areas that haven't been farmed or "improved" with fescue. Once the native plants reappear, fire is a great tool to control brush and other invasives.

more trees and brush i love iit more birds and animals farmers in my area try to cut and kill everything have a lot more than when they started some have quit trying to control it
