Anyone care to elaborate on how skunk oil is made? I see it mentioned in several baits and lures but I’m unsure what it is?

I tried the search function on the website but wasn’t able to come up with any results.

You can heat render it (crockpot is easiest I’ve found) and it will give you a cleaner oil. Or you take clean trimmed fat in a jar like beaver tails and can sun render it and you will get a darker, unique oil.

Thanks for the info. I figured if you were just heating up the fat you would end up with a grease type product instead of oil. Like a tallow instead of oil.

I have always just put clean no odor skunk fat in a jar and left it on a shelf in the fur shed.

Clean fat minus any tissue heat/sun rendered over time will yield a clear fat like shade color with little odor. Render the oil from the scrapings with some underlying tissue will give you a rich, dark musky odor oil. This is the oil we use and prefer for formulation work.
