They are strapped, visibly, to the abdomen and worn as a status symbol, the more ornate signifying the higher status. Some of them are affixed with gemstones with the hilt and sheath plated in precious metals.

Kirpans are a bit different, as they are a religious item for Sikhs and are usually worn slung at the waist rather than strapped to the abdomen.
