Haven't dont one of these in a while so figured it's time . Call it a gun review, caliber review, journal, ramblings of an idiot with too much free time whatever lol

Always missed out on Primitive weapons season because I don't own anything in that class. Lotta the stuff in that class is just too big for me personally. I'm a wuss when I comes to recoil . I know some guy get off on having something that about dislocates their shoulders every shot...but that's not me lol .That and brass and and bullets get more expensive, even if your casting as you go up. Was looking hard at 45-70 , but couldn't ever find it in a gun I liked for the price . that and the dang things would drink lead and powder and I like to plink ( I know I know all the real hunters only shoot aninals not punch paper and steel ....but I barley every kill anything So i think I can get a pass on shooting paper and steel all the time and not want to spend $40 per $20 rd lol ) a lot so ... mabye down the road when I find a deal on a pedersoli repro or something... mabye if I can find a H&R. Buffalo classic.... but I have a love hate relationship with those things ..444 Marlin looked cool but brass had been a pain to find here and there .... well then I learned about .35 where a few months ago and that it was classified as a primative weapons caliber in a single shot , it was just a 30-06 type case necked up to take a .357 bullet .Since I cast for .357 mag and .357 herrett and load for them along with 30-06 and .270 I have a good bit of stuff already so said why not .
helps I have a lot of .270 brass from my father law ...and I don't really know how many firings are on them so need something to do with it [Linked Image]

Also like the history behind it as a way to give the common guy something that could be an all around deal for Africa without a lot of fancy stuff in the reciver or bolt . pretty interesting

https://www.gunsandammo.com/editorial/the-35-whelen-story/248446

Found a nice deal on one of these CVA scouts over on midway and just picked it up today. 22" single shot . really nice lil trigger ( right under 3lbs not much creep but not a glass break ) barrel is threaded , has a lil hammer cocking assist deal ,even has what looks like a deal for iron sights add ons ... which I might do later on because this with a scope doesn't really scream.... " primitive "
recoil pad is nice and soft , and it even came with a different height cheek piece . also come with a rail that from my reading allows the use of both picatinny and weaver mounts .

still need to give it a bore scope but the barrel looks decent
[Linked Image]

as far as optics ... well I don't want something massive and doubtful I'll shoot it past 100yd . Nd I just so happened to have this lil 1-6 LPVO laying around . got sent the wrong reticle for another build , same model scope but figured I'd just keep it around in case something pops up.
seems like a good fit , still sure how I feel about this reticle though

[Linked Image]

and gotta say for chicom "junk" I've been pretty happy with their products for what I do.... probably not any good for you big time killers but I'm a fan
[Linked Image]

so to keep costs a lil lower I'm going to casting for it . Uses the same diameter bullet for .357 mag and like I said I already cast for it and have some I could use ...

[Linked Image]

but their a little on the light side and wanting something a little more ... potent then just a regular solid so checked around and MP had a 200 gr mold with the options for pins to make the mold cast a solid , or a small / large hollow point .
[Linked Image]

but due to a lil issue with my mailing address ( sent and email and it was fix the next day asap , highly recommend dealing with MP) I ordered a lee 200 gr mold just in case... also I really wanted to see it in person, I've seen some say it was great and other day it was a complete junk copy of the RCBS one... which is what the MP one is a clone of funny enough.
[Linked Image]
[Linked Image]

but yeah , just waiting on my dies to get hear and I'll probably start trying to make something with this lee mold in the next day or two since my MP mold is still sitting in Paris at the shipping facility. I'll give her a barrel cleaning tomorrow and post some pictures of the bore.

I thought you didn't like recoil! The only .35 Whelen I ever shot kicked the crap out of me.

I'd say you are mean but I want to see the look on his face after you teach him how to rope a calf but his horse is a rescue with 9 inch toe nails so he ropes one on foot.

Wolfie don't read that last part just cowboy up

Wolfie,
I have one of those in .400 Legend. Recoil not bad.

Also have a M700 Remington in .35 Whelen. Put a Kick-Ease pad or Simms pad on the Scout if you can.

I think the recoil should not be too bad using a light load with cast bullets.

Hands down my favorite caliber, especially with 250 gr. Nosler Partitions @ 2400 fps.

IMO, cast bullets leave a lot of performance on the table. But, if that's your thing, gas checks along with a 220 gr. rifle design bullet with a flat nose, heat treated or water cooled, then nose softened can produce performance more aligned with the 35 Remington pretty easily. Especially in thinner skinned game. And the .35 Remington ain't no slouch for short range work. It also may potentially be more pleasant in recoil for you.

I'm not a fan of using pistol bullet designs except for plinking or small game. And if you desire a hollow point, almost every rifle design with a flat nose can end up a hollow point design, if you've got the coin for the project.

I was impressed with the CVA rifles. My sons have one in 44 mag and another had one in 444 marlin.

Those cast ought to run decent with Unique, 2400, 4895, or even 4198 powders.

Always been interested in the 35 whelen. Keeping my eye on this thread!

I have always wanted one. I even have a Springfield action in the parts bin I would like to build one on someday. And a Mauser action for the the boy to build a 9.3x62 on. That CVA is a good looking rifle

I have a T/C Contender Rifle that was 35 Rem that I had rechambered to 358 JDJ. 444 necked down. Gun was about 5 lbs. It was like an explosion when it went off. After day one I filled butt stock and for end with lead shot and silicone. Had it Magnaported. Made it tolerable.

I have one and love it. In 2002 just before we moved to Alaska I found a 1941 Winchester model 70 in 30-06. I sent to Cliff Labounty for reboring to 35 Whelen. That first winter in Alaska, working a week on/week off and living in an apartment I got plenty of range time. Because all my loading gear was still packed I bought one of the Lee hand presses and started loading. The first powder, at the recommendation of a friend, 4320, was the magic right away. I still use the same load today, 56 grains of 4320 under any 250 grain bullet. It thinks it is a varmint rifle. It will easily shoot five in well under an inch.

I took three caribou with it in Alaska and one moose. The caribou were all with 250 grain Partitions and the moose was with the old Hornady 275 grain round nose.

The old 35 Whelen is as good a do it all in North America round as there is. It's neither too big for deer nor too small for even the biggest bears. It will take them all.

The 250 grain bullets shot so well that all these years later I've still never played with anything lighter.

Trail cameras and fresh snow have broke a lot of trapper’s hearts.
