I went to a public DNR meeting the other night, and this was one of the main topics. I guess it's been around a few years but until last month I had never heard of it. They are getting more and more people to enroll.

I heard the WDNR DMAP employees are busy, though I don't personally know of anyone that's signed up for the program. It'd be interesting to hear from someone in the program.

I'll probably attend this Zoom event. Sounds cool.

You may or may not like it depending on your biologist. Some will recommend killing too many does. Others will tell you that your heard is in proper balance. We have a good one at our camp. They will tell you about suplimental feeding and the proper plants for summer and fall to maximize the health of your heard. They will recommend acerage needed planting for your heard. It can be a pain. In cwd areas they will want you to keep heads and drop them off for testing. All deer harvested have to be logged into a book with a corresponding tag attached to a jaw bone. All the jaw bones get turned in at the end of the season. That will produce a report on the age of the deer you are harvesting and give some info on health. It's worth a look. We haven't found them to very intrusive at all. I guess the biggest agrivation is the records keeping for me personally.

My neighbor in NW Wisconsin is a DNR Forester and speaks very highly of the program- he said take up is slow because individual landowners remain skeptical about inviting the DNR onto their property. I have not heard any negatives but with that said, I prefer to work with the NRCS. Why? I personally believe I have more input on plan development, i.e.' my Forest Management Plan is my plan- when it comes to select cutting, small clear cuts, browse plantings, etc. I dictate the extent and timing. I'm sure the DNR Program is not heavy handed but I wasn't willing to take that chance. The NRCS has a lot of programs that are cost shared and worth looking into.

When making enhancements to stimulate one specie can over time compromise the overall habitat value. With the exception being muskrats, of course.

I did. I'm glad I attended. I'm not sure if I'll sign up, but either way I learned some things. I don't have enough acreage to get the site visit & habitat plan. If I can get my neighbor to sign on with me, I'll be more likely to do it.

1 thing I'd like to say is I was impressed with the meeting format. I hope DNR utilizes that method for more public informational meetings. It was a 2 part simulataneous chat room that attendees could utilize, while also listening to the Zoom speakers. DNR staff answered questions via the chat room or Zoom. There was 1 big problem in that they had so many people try to sign in, and it apparently got capped at 300 people, so some people that anxiously waited for the event were unable to see it. I should mention that they said they are posting the show on their website. Which leads me to 1 other thing I want to mention: DMAP has an amazing website.
I personally have known the co-host, DNR biologist Matt Esser, for over 20 years. The program is legite. A person gets out of the program what they put in. I don't really see any downside. It's not like you are really giving up any rights. The last thing I should mention is there's 3 levels, so ya can enter 10 acres into the program at Level 1. Level 1 is FREE!

To a certain degree, some landowners hands are sort of partly tied when it comes to managing for deer, considering Wi's wolf numbers.
