Lots of the signs seem early this Fall. Ain't nothing can strip a cherry tree faster than a bunch of Cedar Waxwings.

Old timers ate them during the Depression, I've heard.

I knew an old man that could tell you which species of songbirds tasted better than others. He said that killing birds was what fed them in the depression years.

We get large flocks in the winter, if you look close sometimes a guy will get lucky and find a Bohemian Waxwing (second pic). The farther west a guy goes the more common they are.

Heard a story of an old woman who clipped fishing line droppers to her clothesline and baited very small fishing hooks with worms to catch songbirds. Got to be pretty hungry to do that.

I don't know what is about it, but whenever I see group of them, I feel like I owe somebody some money. I haven't seen many of them in my lifetime, and they are a beautiful bird and don't act like any other birds that I know of.
When you see a small flock of them come in, they are all business. No playing around. Eat and run. You only get a brief, fleeting glimpse and then they are gone, but what beautiful glimpse it was.
