I have not been around them so no idea why the following for them. What is the main reason to buy a rifle that seems could be without ammo for them. With the 17 Remington at least you can reload for it.

You can buy all the 17 hmr rounds you'd ever shoot in your lifetime right now today.
A 17 hmr is as comparable to a 17 rem as a 22 lr is to a .223 rem.
The reason to buy one is because, well, why not . Or why not both?

I can't help but think they said the same about the 32 long that my Stevens favorite was chambered in when it was popular.

Came out over 20 years ago and is showing no signs of slowing down...its here for good, along with the ammo. Now the 17hm2 is a different story and I wouldnt bank a dime on that one making the long haul. Im also not convinced the 17WMR rimfire will make the long haul.

I've had my HMR for 20 years. It's popularity is still going strong. Will its popularity continue? They sold a bunch and continue to sell a bunch of them.

There are several rounds that didn't really make the long haul but ammo is still produced in limited quantities. The 5mm comes to mind as does the 22WMR

The 17 HMR displays excellent accuracy with minimal to no tuning. Zero recoil. A bit much for small game unless shots limited to head shots only. Has extended range, have taken crows out to just over 150 yards. Could easily push that range. Bought a bunch of ammo when it was on sale for 7.99/50 when midway was closing some out.

When the 17 HMR first came out about half the people who bought one did not even know there were other 17's on the market. I won a Savage and have never shot it. I have had it about 15 years. I guess I just have nothing I hunt that it matches up too. I have a 17 Rem and use it. The 17 HMR would be a step backward for me.

I have 2 5mm Rem rifles I wasn't able to shoot for DECADES because of no ammo being made. But I managed to score a bunch of Aguila rounds to last me for a long time. Sweet little cartridge.

The 17 mach 2 fits this category more than the 17 HMR as far as availability lots of HMR out there.
