Our second growth patches are just starting to come up on harvest rotations in a few places, they're 80 years I think, but that's a different market. I have cut many of these clear butt log spruce referred to as fiddle butts. Some as big as 36” DBH. Also I have exported 100’s of MBF of native spruce and fir logs to stud mills in Quebec, which milled into framing lumber and sent back to the states.

I've always wondered what the difference is between our old growth and the stuff you guys have over/down there. 36" dbh is small second growth here, we have units at Cape Pole that got logged at the start of WW2 that are 50" average. Old growth doesn't always mean big, but the biggest spruce I've cut so far was 11' 4" across the stump. I did a red cedar last year that was just shy of 15' in diameter where I springboarded it
