I had some fluorescent light kits that I needed to change out to have cold starts in my metal building so I take the old basic ones down put up the complete new units 8 foot lights with 8 kits total on hand from another project. but I need 4 more to complete both sides of the building. 50x30foot building so 6 lights on each of the 50 foot sides.
$70 a kit no bulbs with the newer light weight ballast 2 wire type but still old technology sort of. Now its a job changing them out for 1 guy with wrecked shoulders but I just call that therapy. The old bulbs were single pin the new bulbs needed 2 pin bulbs just figuring out what builds to get took time with so many options. Found a box of 15 for $200 delivered brand name bulbs.
Between YouTube videos and the bulb business website I see that the new type LED bulbs are direct hook up you just eliminate the ballasts now just power the bulbs through the standard end connections it’s that simple who knew I did not. 10 LED bulbs $200 and I believe LED lights do the could start no problem. That leaves me extra bulbs if needed. I need still need 1 bulb for the other units. Since I had the 8 light units on hand not much I could do about not using them. The ability to just change out bulbs and move the power source in minutes is priceless a real time saver. If I did not have the kits on hand the whole conversation would have totaled hundreds less and be done in a day.
LED bulbs $20 ea X 2 direct hook up 1/2 hour upgrade with existing fixtures $40 a light T12 HO bulbs $13 ea X2 plus a $70 fixture to swap out hour plus time $95 a light
Big price difference and I’d guess the LEDs will draw a lot less power.

Since the bulbs are only 40watt listed I was thinking of replacing the 2 bulbs on my overhead door opener with plug in socket replacement so I could plug in 2 LED lights instead of the standard bulbs they take.
Not sure if it will work or be too much draw but that would add a lot more light to the area.

I did have one connection that the mud dabblers plugged with mud that must of shorted it out or ruined the contact.

I did the ballast bypass with a bunch of the fixtures in my horse barn. Worked great. The LEDs don't care about the cold and give more light. Same here, even for my outdoor yard light that used to be HPS. What a difference, nice white light too.
