… the permission post got me wondering what yalls experience has been

… about all the places I’ve ever been in was to kill predators for deer “hunters”

… the couple places I’ve trapped with on staff biologists have shown an increase in fawn survival rates on years after I complete a big kill off

… and I’ll also get messages about imaginary mountain lions from time to time too lol

I’ve only ever snagged one in east Texas and that was on public land

Oh my.
Savell, many years ago I got two phone calls, both from landowners who got my name and number by word of mouth from other farmers I was trapping coyotes on their land. The one call said yeah I was talking with so and so after church last week and we got to talking deer and coyotes, and he gave me your name and number. Both calls were from farmers who were also deer and pheasant hunters and just wanted predator work on their ground. The cool thing was coming to them highly recommended by my other landowners. Always be a good steward and guest, so your job, show them your predator catches, and make them happy but always be gracious and thankful for the opportunity to be a guest on their land too.
Those both turned into awesome trapping ground relationships. I’d hammer their coyotes and cats in winter. But then throughout the year we stayed in touch. They shared pics from their game cameras. Fawns, pheasants, turkeys, and always the occasional coyote or cat. The next season I’d hammer their coyotes and cats again. I never asked them to hunt on their property, or fish their ponds. I was quite happy getting access to private ground and getting to trap predators. Great relationships. Over the years we became good friends with both. They even showed up at my son’s graduations and we often swap vacation and other just life stuff pics and stories.
Predator trapping made their hobby better, and it certainly fed my soul and made my life better too.
And these weren’t isolated couple calls. My 45+ years of trapping has always been like this. Seems like there is always a need for predator management and I’m very happy to be of service to my neighbors around here.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

NY is a little different, i've had dozens of farmers tell me i can shoot all the deer i want

however if I shoot 1 coyote, i'm not welcome back, they love the little deer eaters

Missouri had a study a few years ago putting tracking collars on does to monitor fawn survival. Three of the does would stay on our farm and have their fawns. Talked with them quite a bit over 4 years. End of May/beginning of June they would really monitor the does. Via satellite on their computer they could track their movements. When a doe started just staying in one spot then leave and keep coming back they were boots on the ground. Had 2-3 days to catch the fawn and collar it. I went out with them a few times. In the area where they thought the fawn was we would just spread out and start walking. Guy next to me found one that was less than a day old. Put on rubber gloves and just pick it up. Pretty easy meal for a predator. In 1 day they could catch it by hand. Days 2-3 they would also take a large fishing net. After 3 days they wouldn't bother trying. Collar was elastic bunched up in several spots. As the fawn grew pressure was put on the seam which would then give way and make it larger. Within a year the collar would fall off and they would retrieve it. When the study was over they released the collars on the does by computer. They did this in multiple spots in MO. Results: 40% fawn survival in the first month was great. Most of the time around 30%. If a fawn could make it 2-3 weeks they were likely to survive. They said the best way to help fawn survival is trap/shoot coyotes and bobcats the last 2 weeks of May and first 2 of June. Of course that isn't legal in some instances.
