I’m sorry for the Dumb and Dumber movie quote but I had to. A recent thread on here about mink and worms has got me thinking. I’ve lived my whole life on the farm and skun and butchered all sorts of animals, cut myself many times and I got to wondering ….Well, do I have worms? Just wondering how many of you guys have ever treated yourself out of precaution or actually confirmed that you did have parasites after dealing with animals?

We take a shot of pyrantel at work when initiating new crew. Figure that takes care of it. Tastes like pancake batter.

Almost every time I worm cattle I end with a touch of ivermectin. My brother had some type of parasite and wormed himself with ivermectin pour on which got rid of it but I can't remember what he had.

Not worms but my son had Cat Scratch Fever. Yes its real not just a song. Got him a swollen gland removed and us a trip to the infectious disease doctor. Go figure he had done some trapping in his youth. I ask could my son have gotten the cat scratch fever from critters i dragged home. Answer to that was no. Most likely got it from playing with barn cats when stopped to talk to farmers where I was trapping.
This same doctor recommended I get per exposure rabies vac. Which I then did.

I have seriously considered deworming. It's hard to find solid information on how to do it.

I wouldn't give medical advice but look into ivermectin. If you use a "pour on" you need to clean your skin first as it will take anything on your skin into it

Ive never been tested but like you have butchered and skinned thousands of animals.
Did have one ringworm mark on my thigh probably 25 years ago and got rid of it with a topical over the counter cream

Also, pyrantel (and Ivermectin for that matter) won't help against flukes and tapeworms.

Normally you won't have any symptoms if you have roundworms and are healthy otherwise, unless you've got a ton of them (but that usually means your immune system is weakened). Your allergies might get worse, and sometimes you can get eczema-like rashes.

Often the most dangerous part of the parasite life cycle is when they die. Especially if they die fast and all at once. This is why you should never take drugs that kill flukes and tapeworms, such as praziquantel, at home, because the adverse reactions can be very fast and severe (including anaphylactic shock and liver failure). This is also why with some flukes, such as Opistorchis flukes, letting them be is sometimes the best strategy unless you have symptoms that need addressing (blocked liver ducts, bad eosinophylia, etc.)

I (try to remember to) take pyrantel at least twice a year, just in case (gardening, pets, handling dead animals are all good reasons to take roundworm drugs regularly). Everybody in the household should take it at once, including pets. Normally nothing happens (and shouldn't). No need to expect massive bundles of roundworms to come out, like it happens when you give pyrantel to a month-old stray puppy.

However, a couple of years ago I took a dose of pyrantel and forgot about it, but a few hours later I spiked a HIGH fever (104F), of the bad kind, with severe chills and blush-white toes, and a bad headache. Took a few hours to figure out what was going on.
Apparenlty something died from the pyrantel, and as it was dying, it released toxins that caused a rather severe adverse reaction (and I'm relatively young and healthy). My friend, a doctor, uses this case in her lectures in our medical academy, because typically you don't expect such dramatic symptoms from a single dose of over-the-counter anti-roundworm drug.
