From the looks of the first photo that appears to be a very steep and woodsy valley. The cabin build may have been made on the only flat ground in the area large enough to suit his needs. Maybe it was a very small tributary that didnt carry much run off water in the spring.

Story might be real. I doubt a remote family in mid 1800s ever had a picture taken.

Actually they look like Santa may be under the pile of them. I will admit that there appears to be multiple severals of them though.
