I caught a coyote in late February one year. Only visible hair was a tuft on the tip of its tail. I have no idea how that thing survived the Winter. It had to have been living in someplace that had some warmth.

When my kids were little (20yrs ago or so smile ) I spotted a coyote in my front pasture that was probably 90% hairless.

It was sub freezing and spitting snow.

I went to get a gun to put it out of it's misery and by the time I got a gun unlocked and loaded it was nowhere to be found.
I felt terrible for that poor thing as it surely suffered a terrible death.

Dad was deer hunting once near some stored rolls of hay, looked away from hay a minute and when he looked back there was a coyote with bad mange standing near the bales. Dad figured he had been burrowed in between the bales in the empty space underneath so it could stay warm

I don't want to see any animal suffer a terrible death
And when numbers reach a certain level there is a dieoff resulting in terrible deaths for a lot (mange, distemper, etc)

This picture was taken in 2008. Mange is common in red fox here. It is actually rare to see a fox with none here. They all have at least a little bit. This one was real bad. It was about 20% fur and 80% scab. Almost it's whole body covered in scabs. Just picture how much that animal needed to scratch from the itch of something underneath it's skin. It would drive a human insane.

National Geographic found this photo online and contacted me to use it in a documentary about the mythical animal called a chupacabra showing how something like this could be mistaken for a chupacabra. I've also given permission for one of our members here to put on his ADC website.

Buttttt..... I've seen other people on the net stealing this photo.
If you see this picture somewhere else , it is my picture and they stole it.

Crager the fox in my area also have mange most of the time. It's a bummer when over half your catch is tossed be cause of it every year

Yup, I had that pic on my website for a few years. Until I got my own, which looks almost identical, even the manger. Someone had called to ask if they could use your pic, but I said it wasn't my permission to give. Don't know if it was NatGeo or someone else, but referred them back to you. This one was just as bad in Aug. 2013

Yeah, he was totally blind. I think he might have seen a little shadow, as he reacted once the muzzle was within a couple inches of his forehead.

That's a pretty sad looking fox , Brian.

The main reason I allowed NatGeo to use the photo was it was going to be used in a good way to educate people about how horrible mange can be and they also were dispelling the myth of the chupacabra. I didn't receive any compensation for it , but it was a good learning tool.

I had a potential customer call me once and told me they had a mangy fox visiting their property. Then she asked me if I could provide dead mice loaded with Ivermectin to drop them in her yard so hopefully the fox would eat them and get better.

I told her flat out , NO.
I explained I could not be responsible for just willy-nilly drop off pharmaceuticals outside with the hope the right animal would find them and get a correct dosage without risking the wrong animal getting them. She tried hard to get me to do it and offered very serious money , but I still refused.

FYI - you may find your photo someday out there on the web , stolen like mine.
