That one was listed as using Lag frames which has me wondering how.

No, just looks like another horizontal hive. Quite a few out there and seems like simple enough principle. Could likely split it and run 2 queens in lower flow situations as 15 deep frames generally plenty per hive. Harvesting honey might take a bit more effort as you are only pulling single frames out at a time.........probably work fine for a few hives like under 5 but no commercial operators will use them due to inability to transport.

Not quite like that one, Pete. We have a top bar hive that is based on the original Kenyan top bar hive, which is not rectangular in cross section. It does not have full frames, but only top bars. I am guessing that the hive in that link has rectangular removable frames?

Anyway, possibly similar, but not the same!

Top bars like ours are definitely not for high production. We won't have frames we can centrifuge for honey removal.

The more I read on this site the less sense it makes.

Just a long lang. Like any hive design pros and cons, biggest is bees natural cavity is a vertical tree hollow so they like vertical and we use vertical for box swapping and manipulation. Pro, bees are highly adaptable and will take to a horizontal cavity just fine because trees do fall over, we just have to figure out how to as well.

Me, personally see that design as best for the backyard keeper that will only keep one or two and never move the hive. That or the older keeper that can no longer do the lifting regular langs require.

Drifter, are you asking about that type of hive or that specific brand?
