Last Saturday I got to do a trapping demo/trapping information session at a local day camp put on by several Churches. There were over 105 kids and adults registered along with probably another 40 helpers. The sessions were only 45 minutes to maybe 55 minutes long. The kids got to shoot 22 cal rifles and black powder guns at one station. I did a trapping demo station. There was an archery station .... a bushcraft demo ..... fishing station and finally a blue rock/shotgun station. I didn't have a lot of time but I did pass out some info pamphlets from the NTA, FBU, and the Nebraska Game and Parks concerning trapping. I talk some of how trapping started in this land clear back with the pilgrims landing and trading for fur.... how the fur business grew in the NEW WORLD... Then I get into how traps work and the different types.... leg.... bodygrip....rat traps. snares... dog proofs... cage traps...and briefly cover how to set them. I let the kids set and trip cage traps if they want. A big group comment session always follows after I let them smell several lures and commercial baits. And I let the kids hold and admire my tanned fur collection. The adults love that experience also and usually there are alot of questions/ comments about the fur. I don't get into putting up fur. Usually there are a half dozen kids who show alot of interest... ask a lot of questions. And always some adults who ask questions.... make comments like " Trapping and traps are nothing like I have heard about them" after my talking and demos. This year I had a young lady with 2 small kids really show alot of interest and made a lot of comments . After the day was done she came back as I was putting stuff away. I could tell she was taken by my demo and talks. She explained that she was a young widow....( maybe 28 or 30 years old) That I reminded her of her Grandpa and Dad... (both gone)... who were trappers. She had hoped her husband would take up trapping someday and pass the heritage to their children. I listened and could hear her voice quivering as she talked. She was from Kanas but originally from the area where the outdoor camp was held. When she asked how to get started trapping or just loving the outdoors in general I suggested to call her state Game and Parks and keep asking questions. Someone will surely help her. I gave her my name and phone number and told her she will be on my prayer list... her kids too. I could see the look on her face changed from maybe sadness to an expression of hope.... almost gratitude.... She thanked me and then went to dinner and listened to the speaker. Hopefully someone will help here back where she lives.... I need to get her name from the sign up list and follow up . You never know what God brings to you to help someone. It was a good day !!
