Had a couple rabid beaver locally in NE CT a few years ago. Dog went into the water and was attacked. The couple with dog jumped into the river to save him. If I remember correctly, the man almost lost his thumb and the woman was bit in the thigh. The state had a trapper in (not me), five beavers caught, two were rabid.

Somewhere in NC this week we had a rabid groundhog.
