I plan to clean my fur better this year cause when I'm done working the pelts they are bloody and greasey and everything else. I have heard that getting the skin wet after fleshing will cause hair slip. Is this true? I was thinking about washing after fleshing, letting air dry a few hours (after wringing most the excess out of course) and then stretching.
Any thoughts?

Here's my method. I skin, flesh then wash with dish washing soap. Then I stretch wrong side out for a day, rub under the front legs with borax or anywhere else that takes longer to dry, turn right side outand leave until dry. Never had a problem with hair slipping. I trap mostly coyote, fox, coon, skunk and once in a while a mink and badger.

I do similar to Jack.....but I wash mine in a washing machine (3 coyotes is a load) and then tumble them dry in a dryer at low heat. Then I board them skin side out until tacky, sometimes using a fan to speed the process before turning.

And I put a little downy in the rinse cycle.

Of course, being single helps with this process....!!

I do mine slightly different...
I skin
Then wash
Snap dry
hang over night
put in freezer until ready to flesh a bunch
then board

I think what ever you chose, you'll be fine... Just go with what is quickest and easiest for you.

If I even suggested using the washing maching and dryer, I'd be sleeping in the chicken coop!!!

I skin,flesh, turn or remove the cartledge from the ears and split the tail then wash in cold water using a dish soap. I then hang the hides until they are drip dry which is usually over night. I then board them fur in until they feel like a piece of paper. At that time I remove them from the board turn them fur out and reboard. I do not use or recommend borax or salt as both attract moisture.

when you say greasy hides, are you referring to coon?

I want info on all hides, but yes I was refering to coon on that part, my coon hides get alot of grease after this rookie wrestles em all over!

My diatribe was regarding coyotes......

i wouldnt wash coon after you flesh them or youre gonna have a big mess,imo.
youd be ahead to wipe em down with a rag or newspapers after you stretch em and dry them to get the excess grease off.

we drum ours after fleshing but before stretching but not everyone is equipped to do that.some people call it a waste of time but we like the results we get when doing it and dont mind the extra few minutes it might take to put them up.

i prefer not to wash them at all unless it is ablolutely needed. i simply rinse the coon, if near water at the time it is caught by dipping in the water until it is clean. by the time i get them home they are usually pretty dry. if i have coons that are dirty when i get home i rinse them good in cold water and let them hang till dry. take a little care while skinning and fleshing and you wont have to do anything else as far as cleaning is concerned.

if i do have to wash coon after i skin and flesh, i dry them off the best i can by hand then i lay the coon down on a big towell. i then take another towell and place on top of the coon. i start rolling the animal up in the towells appling a little pressure. do this a few times and rotate the towells and you will be surprised how dry the coon will be. may only have to let it hang a short while with ventilation till you can stretch it. this is the fastest most efficient way i have found to do not only coon but most furbearers. just the way i do it.

what I do is wash them get as much water off as possible hang them for a bit comb them out and straight to the board and put a fan in my drying room

Get a few of those cheap mesh laundry bags. Put one or two furs in each bag, and take them to an out of the way laundromat late evening. Leave them in the bag to wash them.

I wash almost all my fur, especially coyotes as well as my raccoons. Wring them out and hang to drip dry overnight and you are good to go the next day. You may think that it is not necessary to wash your fur but all you have to do is look at the water after the first rinse and try to tell yourself that it wasn't dirty. Catching an animal is only part of being a professional trapper. It is what we do with the fur after we catch it shows respect for that animal and demonstrates to those around us that we have a genuine respect and care for what we are doing.
