Have the fur combed out & cleaned up before you stretch it.

i am not an expert at this fur handling thing. butttt

it cannot be cleaned after it has been put on a strecther!

The process i do is after the catch i clean and rinse, let dry in front of fan over night combing several times, skin first thing next morning, if still wet let hang again over night then freeze and when i get enough to flesh i put up as much fur as i can in a day.

this works great for me, i am sure people will disagree.

good luck

ed

I wouldn't comb it after it's on the stretcher. I would aim to do it before, but I suppose if you forgot to and need to(if the skin is still moist enough) you could flip it and then comb it and then flip it back....but aim to comb and clean before stretching

You may be able to kinda comb it out after it is dry, I wouldn't try to flip it and do it, just comb it out the best you can once it is removed from the stretcher. The holes make sure they are pinned shut, a small hole will turn into a big one during the drying process if pinned closed. As far as pelt value, it will depend on the size of the hole, the placement of it, and the value of the hide before you started if it was a small coon not worth much a hole may devalue it completly, if it was a xxl then it may not affect it much.

Step By Step

Skin and then comb the fur.

Turn fur inside and flesh the fat from coon.

Put on stretcher and let dry.

Do not turn fur out to dry and do not turn after its dried as they want the fur in.

The hardest part and the most inportant part is the fleshing. Its the biggest reason that most big number guys sell them just skinned and don't bother to finish them.

Get yourself a slicker dog brush that is the one with all the wires. Next buy yourself a stone fur comb course model, and the last thing that really helps with fur handling is some clean dry sawdust.
Brush each fur before you skin it and again before you flesh it and one more time before you put it on the stretcher.
I word to the wise do not put wet fur on the stretcher, always dry your fur first. The use of a fan is a excellent way to dry wet fur and to speed up the drying process.
Follow this link to our pelt handling manual you can download from the site or order one via e-mail
