I have seen very few if any yotes that are boardy be worth two cents, The reason they are boardy is because of lack of undefur. We have a lot of wire neck yotes in my country and most every one is boardy in the neck area.
I don't think I have ever paid any decent money on a boardy yote.

Charles it would take to much typing for me to splain why undefur causes softness in hides, but that is the true reason for boardy. Also mangy yotes have boardy leather, but they always stink to high heaven. I can always smell a bad yote in the bunch before I ever get to the bad one.

So Don when you say boardy necks, could that be the start of mange?

It could be the start of the mange but Like I said before, we have a lot of yotes in this area that don't show any sign of mange, but have a wiry neck. The neck is fully covered with long guard hair but has no underfur to it. Once you get past the area that has no underfur, you get a soft pliable pelt. I see early caught yearling yotes in this area that are usually quite boardy in the complete pelt. Most of these early caught pups have very little underfur to them and they are boardy also.
The easiest explanation I can give for the reason the skin is boardy is , the animals lack enough hair follicles that the leather just don't get soft and pliable.

Yepper shaking a boardy yote is like shaking a 2x12, it just don't shake. The boardy yotes will be the tores most likly to sell for a buck or so at the auction houses. But it is not only the boardy ones that don't bring much.

Help me out here - I hate skinning coyotes with a passion - seem to always hit the jugular when I am working the head out and have a gooey mess trying the finish the animal.
Am I right in assuming then that if there is no underfur in the neck region - the coyotes are pretty much worthless? I had one in the chicken coop this morning so I guess I am going to have to declare war on them. I'd much rather mess with coons....

I use a knife all the way down as I'm a newb (with no machine) but it only gets bloody when I get to the ears. In my effort to stay close to the skull I am getting veins on the head. Now I take them down right after I do the ears and the blood goes on the animal and not the fur.

Get some more pratice tonight after work.

If all a yote had is long hair in the kneck area, you pretty much have a real cheap yote. This area usually extends all the way down to the area that the fur gets short in around the shoulder area.
Take your hand and rake the guard hair towaeds the head. If you see no underfur, you have a wiry knecked yote. I suppose when the market is good, you might get 6-8 bucks on yotes that have a well filled out wiry neck. On a weak market, they are very very cheap.
