I use it for curing salmon/steelhead eggs...though that's not where the uses end...
Comes in a laundry detergent-type box(in the aisle where you'd find other laundry detergent) in the grocery store. colorful box, says something like "20 mule team" borax, or something like that....I just put it in baggies, so can't remember exactly what it looks like. One box cures a lot of eggs.

Their is a place called Touchstone Taxidermy supply. They sell powdered borax for approx $1 a pound. This stuff is a lot more fine than the 20 mule Team Borax. They are located in Bossier City, La. http://www.touchstonetaxidermy.com/cat11006/Cat11006.htmLot of taxidermists use the stuff to flesh hides befor adding Dry Preserve for mounting. I've seen it used at a buddies shop in GA and it really draws out the moisture. I have a 5 gallon bucket ofitin my shop that I use for fleshing fish.

They have everything you can think of mounted there. They use to have a 14 pt buck in a pin out back. I live like 35-40 miles from Touchstones.

it doesnt really matter what u use it on from a mouse to a moose if you are using it as a fleshing aid , really helps bloody messes to be fleshed and takes the slipperyness away. but do not use it as a preservative or to dry your hides faster because it will cause shrinkage if rubbed on bare skin. to remove grease from skins you can use a basic detergent like dawn dishsoap or for my taxidermy work i use a chemical called kemal-4 this stuff is much stronger, and powdered borax is focused more towards bird taxidermy the granular borax (20 mule team from wal mart) is great for any work on mammals or fish, i also spread it on the cement to clean up when im done fleshing hope this helps !

I use it a lot and like it,we have high humidity most of the time, even with fans going it can take a while to dry a pelt, I keep a 3 gal. kitty litter bucket bout half full. After fleshin, I put the pelt flesh side out in the bucket, close the lid and shake it,like batterin fish or squirrel.Them take it out hold pelt by the nose and pop out the loose borax, the put on a stretcher, speeds up drying time. when I start to turn a cat or fox,I put a little more around the ears and under front legs or arm pits. On coon ,beaver and otter, after pelt is dryed on stretcher I wipe off any remaing borax with a cloth or paper towel. I been usin it 2 or 3 yrs.and really like it. Dont get any in your eyes ,it burns like crazy. I take the pelt ouside to pop out loose borax, close your eyes or turn your head when your poppin it out of a hide.

take me to where the blacktop ends.. then go further with me
