Has anyone tried chain drowners how are they. Are they worth the extra cost?

I dont understand why they are needed. We catch a lot of 50 or 60+ lb. Beaver, and just wire the slide wire to the bag of weight. Never a problem with the right size wire. Looks like extra weight and extra cost for nothing gained to me.

I have used them since the 90s and love them! They are a bit costly at first but after the first season they are paid for. They are heavier than wire/cable but I just got tired of replacing the stuff. I use a 12-15 foot piece of #2 machine chain and if too much just s-hook up to shorten up. Slick!

yes they work great and last forever, i run chain drowners on some and cable on others, its actually easier to set up the chain drowners, i use quick links to change the lengths and create loops, my locks are homemade, 3 inches of inch and a half pipe with a arm welded to it facing foreward.

I use chain drowners for all my water sets, and have for 15 years. the cost is covered by their long life and ease of use.

I have never heard of these? Can some one explain them a little better? Is there a site I can go to to read about them?

yeah i read that in ffg-just came a couple day ago. interesting read. I dont have any beaver terr. trap yet but the system looks like a good plan.

"Duct tape, ratchet straps, zip ties, balin twine, bungie cords, WD-40, and a bigger hammer can fix any thing and WILL save the world some day"

I've built and used them for several years. The best part is I can use the same lock for either chain or my rods. The lock is permanently attached to my trap and I can use whatever drowner I want. I use 2/0 chain that is 10' long, it has a universal swivel at the top for staking and I use a kwik link at the bottom. Tie plates have worked best for weights for me. Here's a pic of my lock.

Here's a pic of the chain set-up. I use this when I can use a drowning rod, chain abd rods are all I use for footholding beaver. It's the quickest way I've ever found and the beaver is always at the bottom.

Dumb question but were do you guys get these tie plates? Also Mr. Bauer you said that your trap is permanently attatched to the lock. Well on the rod method how does your lock come off the rod when not in use,i see how it comes off the chain but dont get the rod. Thanks

The lock slips over the U shaped end of the rod and there is a stop welded to the bottom end of the rod to prevent the lock from coming of at the bottom. Look at the pic earlier in the post to see the lock on the rod. At an angle it will slip right over the top.
Tie plates can be found along the tracks or if you can find where the railroad is working the guys will sometimes let you grab a bunch. Otherwise you can get em from the scrap yard but they do want a couple of bucks each.

Thanks tim i thought it might slip off the top end of the stake when not in use but was'nt sure. Nice setups. I am assuming it is your lock that MTP sells?
