Flyguy, it not the "hooves" you want...it's the soft stuff up INSIDE the hoof. It's called "frog" by many....and it's dang good coyote bait. If your uncle won't tell you....I don't know what to say. But most trappers used it by mixing it in spring or rain water just to keep it moist. Contact a furrier and they will probably hook you up!

One of the Texas guys on this forum posted on how to make it before.I made a batch last year I put the hoof and frog in a large jar topped it off with water and let it bake on the tin roof. Some methods you can boil it either way you end up with some stinky tea.

I have'nt made any of this type of lure, but it is the hoof trimmings that you want. As a dairy farmer and had horses all my life, we trimmed them and the farm dogs fought over the trimmings. Best of luck, Nute

I have heard of dogs eating hoof trimmings as nute pointed out. Wiley Carroll once told me that he took a rasp and "filed" down horse hooves into a powder..... then he would "sprinkle' some on bait he'd made. Claimed it really "seasoned up" a meat bait. Well, something to think about anyway....................

The hoof trimmings aged in water make for some of the stinkiest dope one can imagine. Canines want to roll in it, that is the main attraction in my opinion. Used alone or in formulation it will get a lot of attention from canines and bobcats. I have experimented with it and found it will also guarantee a maximum shunk harvest in one's canine sets. We don't have possums here but i'm willing to bet possums would be on the run marching in for miles to get at it too. Ace

I also made some from Blake's recipe and found deer here wouldn't leave it alone long enough for a yote to find it .

His recipe was to boil it OUTSIDE in a pan you NEVER want to use for anything else . Place in a glass jar and let age . All he added to it was water . Claimed it was like fine wine and the longer it aged the better .
