Well, I have finished hundreds of coon and good numbers of about everything else that walks or crawls in NE. I am thinking of putting up some skunks cause that is all I can catch in my cat sets. First, every one I have ever caught has sprayed. How do you get the stink out prior to skinning? Second, is there much fleshing involved with skunks? Third, what wood boards are designed for skunk? I have some small coon boards, fox boards and rat boards, will any of these work or do I need different boards for skunks?

small coon board or fox boards is what i use. peroxide, baking soda and little dish soap will kill the smell. mix in a 5 gallon bucket and give it a wash.

Anything else I need to know, besides the obvious regarding the opening cuts?

99 out of 100 times you shoot a skunk it will spray so the best way to deal with the odor is a skunk pole. From the limted times I have used mine, not one has sprayed. This does not help now but next year it is something you should consider getting. Good Luck

Hmmmm? You know, I have never been sprayed by a skunk. Got a little on the bottom of my boots more times than I care to mention, but never a direct hit. The reason for this is that I am a pretty good shot with my pistol out to about 20 yards, well beyond the skunk's effective range. Now, call me an idiot, but that pole y'all are talkin' about and the methods I have heard so far are all within the shooting distance for our skunks. Has anyone ever heard of Murphy's Law? Well this law applies to me every second of every minute of every hour of every day. I think I would rather de-stink a skunk than press my luck using another method. Unless, of course, there is a nice safe method that I am not seeing here.

Do you actually get all the stink out of their fur or is it just to the point you can stand it? My fur shed is behind my house, in the city limits, and I would really hat to get run out of town by my neighbors... blush Of course, if the odor is drawn down to a nice long-range roadkill smell, I can live with that. grin

What's the recipe for the peroxide/baking soda/dish soap formula for destinkifying these stripey critters?
