We are using a red fox for this demonstration.

Start with the skinned carcass still hanging on the gambrel.

[Linked Image]

Make an incision on the center of the belly. Be careful, if the bladder is full it will be just under the surface, make a very shallow cut.

[Linked Image]

Spread the incision open and pull the hopefully full bladder outside the body cavity.

[Linked Image]

This is what an empty bladder looks like.

[Linked Image]

We use a plastic pint bottle and a small plastic funnel. With plastic you don't have to worry about dulling your knife on metal or contaminating urine with the rust that will form on a metal one.

[Linked Image]

Place the bladder (still attached and intact) in the funnel.

[Linked Image]

Then stick it with your knife.

It is the fastest, cleanest way we have found to remove urine from caught fox.

It would be nice to find a bladder that full, I'm lucky to get 1/2 an oz out of most of em.

Most of your male fox will have urine, your females usually don't I've found. Don't have a clue why...

great tutorial lugnut. Coop, not calling you on this but just laughing when I see a canines tracks in the snow going from bush to rock to stumps to grass tuft and a squirt on each one I see my male dog....he always has a little squirt left for whatever...would think the females would have more....just thinking......Mac~

Although I have trapped over 50 years without a partner I am never alone...God and my Dad are always there with me.

I don't keep any stats on it but going from memory, both my trapping partner and I think there is no noticable difference in which sex we collect more urine from. Both the fox pictured (empty and full bladders) are females.

walkingstick2, your statement on the males marking is an interesting one. I might have to start keeping track now (thanks lol).

Lugnut, That is a wonderful educational tutorial. Great contribution for those to learn how to collect the genuine article.

Bravo!
