Hey mole, what angle do you use on the Lansky? I have one and thought about using it but thought the rod was too short. I have been using a small file. One thing I learned from owning a lansky is to maintain the same angle at all times. Put a bright light overhead and make sure your file is following the entire length of the blade edge itself. File at that angle or any other constant and maintained angle until you feel the wire edge break on the back side of the blade. The longer the angle the sharper but less durable and vice versa. Do this the entire length of the blade then turn knife over. I use opposing file strokes for each side of the blade going towards the middle, i.e. 2 o'clock strokes for the left side and 10 o'clock strokes for the right side. Using the same file and VERY light pressure, almost just the weight of the file, place the file flat against the back side of the blade and pull the file toward the spine of the blade along it's entire length until you feel the "wire edge" disappear. This is the delicate part of the process. Also ensure you are not leaving a wire edge on the blade side. If you are, you are using too much pressure to remove the wire edge. Shave as desired with your new razor. It takes time, but each time you sharpen it, it will only get sharper. I own a standard 12 incher and it will do the job nicely. I'm just a fist year trapper but I know this sharpening method works. Haven't tried the boiling method but I bet it works. These guys on here know what they are talking about, most of the time.
