You can make em pretty much any way you want as long as they have a ramp for them to crawl up and drop down in. Some will get out, but as long as you have a big enough piece of bait they will stay with it and they can't swim right out when you lift it up. Get a lot of cotton mouths with em down here. We use a lot of scoop nets, have to stomp some snakes down in the mud that way too. In clear water creeks with knee deep water used to just shine a light and spot their eyes and pick em up by hand.

If you find a good spot, you can use a chicken neck on a string and catch a bucket full. Make a wire dip net to put under 'em when you get them to the suface or you will lose a lot.
A soft answer turneth away wrath.

take a piece of 1/4"x1/4" wire.. cut it to a length of 4'width of 18"
fold it into a rectangle and then cut up one end of each of the four corners... fold them all in and they will overlap... this will be the bottom of the trap.. cut down each corner at the top about 4".. fold these down too only fold them into the trap at about a 30 degree angle... take an old sock and fill it with dogfood, wire it to the bottom of the cage and drop the whole thing in enough water to completly cover it......leave it for 4/5 days and it will be full of c'daddies..

take me to where the blacktop ends.. then go further with me

I make my own similar to how kmiller makes his, though mine are round. I've got one entry, face it downstream. The food in the sock is a good idea.
Some states have restrictions on the size opening for the crawdad trap. Wisconsin does, and you have to have a trap tag on there.

I freeze 'em whole 'till I can mess with them. Then I dump them into a five-gallon pail, take a paint stirring bit for a drill and go to mashing them up. Pour in a healthy shot of shellfish oil, stir some more, then freeze in plastic bags for the upcoming season.

An open bucket of this goo in the boat goes a long ways. Many times I just grab a handful of this and smear it on the bank in the grass to get the 'coon's attention.

A little vaseline mixed in will help you smear this on bridge abutments and posts and help keep it on.

The ones I use are from http://www.catfishconnection.com they are $5.15 each, can't hardly make them for that. Click "online catalog"-"nets, seines, and trawls"-"live bait traps" ~ADC~ | | |
