There are good s-hook pliers, and there are poor ones. I am still using a pair of link-fix I bought in the early 60s. I do use them with care, and only on my line; I have another pair I use as a shop tool for production work.
Hopefully, we'll have a great pair of s-hook pliers on the market soon - if Pogo can get it all together.
I hear about folks loosing animals from s-hooks. I've never had it happen, if I use a centering washer.
IMO, an s-hook w/o a centering washer is a piece of junk, and a waste of time.
The other thing to watch out for is metal fatigue. If in closing j-hooks and/or s-hooks, you feel the metal "go soft", that hook will break, and is good only for the junk pile. You can use hooks more than once, but don't get greedy, and try for a hundred times, or a new world's record.

45/70 What do you mean by centering washer?
  Thanks

NAPA carries a sturdy tire chain tool. Some of the crap put out there does not belong in a trappers supply catalog period.
