I get used empties from the local restaurant. They go through a lot of bulk condiments that comes in them, usually in cases of four. I talk to the cook in advance to save a few empty cases for me when needed, requesting the lids be left on.
A good cleaning eliminates residual odors from mustard, pickles, relish, etc. as not to interfere with the bait stock flavors.

Asa, You just added to my knowledge base - again! Thank you.
I have only made prepared bait for raccoon in the past in those jars; however, I have been thinking about trying to put some up for canines. I know better now not to use one that pickles use to live in.
To avoid any hint of possible contamination from the restaurant jar source, I will definitely rely on a new jar instead.

there is a reason that no comercial lure makers us mayo jars and peanut butter or baby food jars. you wouldnt go through all the trouble to make a fine wine only to bottle it in any old bottle you find

local auction
One time I got a #2 washtub and as many mason jars as I could fit into it for one dollar. Best deal of my life.
Pat, as usual, you are right....

Glass is definitely the only way to go if one is going to store lures or urines for any length of time. Plastic is porous and odors in lures and amonia in urines gradually escapes through the pores and one eventually has a flat smelling product. Also, I'm not sure but lures may also take on the plastic odor which could potentially be detrimental to canine lures. Asa

It seems like it would be hard to duplicate a lure maybe a coon lure if you were using a baby food jar you thought was clean. It may would work well enough but could you make the same lure again if you were using a jelly jar ?? you thoght you had cleaned well

Whatever sized "clean" container one chooses for a bait's long term storage, don't overlook the fact that the lid needs a tight seal. Jonathan

All I use is Glass gallon jars for mixing/aging/formulating lures in,Glass rocks, plus I make everything 1 gallon at a time. Bait is a different story, all of my bait gets aged/mixed in 5 gallon buckets. Than packaged in 1 pint plastic jars than frozen. Once I get and order or head to a convention, I thaw them out and label them. As far as rendering my fish oils and rotting different things,Liver/eggs/fish/cheese/rodents,etc, its all done in plastic. One excepction Glands are all aged in glass,in a cool area....B...
