If you are "dead" set on killing them (glue boards), why not simply catch them, and release them out in the woods or a good friend's barn.
Once more, let me see if I understand you: you know they are benificial, but you are going to kill them any way. What kind of conservationist and trapper are you?
A couple of small children? So what? How small? My children and grandchildren were handling snakes at 2 years old (or younger). They quickly learned to identify what they could and could not pick up.
Friends? If they are really friends, they will understand that the Kings are killing rodents in and around your home on a regular basis the year 'round, and they MIGHT see a couple of Kings that, if you have done your job, they know are harmless, but they won't see any rats or mice running around your pantry, or rodent droppings all over your kitchen counter.
As for the snakes being drawn to the cricket sounds, snakes can't hear. As the younguns say, "Duh!".
Anything you do but kill them is way better than killing them, and is testimonial to your practices as a conservationist. Man, trapping is, among other things, the conservative harvest of wildlife, and the protection of other wildlife. Conservation of wildlife is one of the great, primary arguments that supports our actiivity.
I don't give a tinker's dam what you call yourself, but you are not a trapper if you destroy these Kings. Don't represent yourself as one!

45/70- I am sure that you know that snakes are easily released from glue traps using vegetable oil. In fact, I just "released" my dog from a glue trap with a little bit of PAM (olive oil) this morning. I have captured many snakes and lizards with glue traps. All were released, unharmed, using PAM. I usually keep a spray can in the truck.

Arkansasbowhunter- Very little success is often gained by any use of deterrents. Moth balls are more of an urban legend then the answer. As a professional, many of us either require a specific license to use a chemical and or have to follow the labeling on a product anyway. Mothballs are not labeled for snakes, birds, bats or most anything anyway. They are labeled for Moths they seem to be more of a deterrent to me then any other critter. If you don't want to have snakes try working on modifying the habitat. 1. Remove all the places that they can hide from their own predators. 2. Keep grass short. Maybe re-evaluate your landscaping. 3. Erect fence barriers including below the surface 8-12 inches. 4. Eliminate the food source and they will leave. They probably are present because of a local food supply rodents, fish, birds nest etc. Snakes are in your attic for a reason! For more info, see my notes at http://snakeremovals.com/
